This may not be contributing a whole lot, but I recently did a cake with Japanese writing for a childs birthday. It's in my gallery under Cherry Blossoms. The first line of characters reads Happy Birthday and the second line is the child's name ( Riley, in case anyone was curious).
The characters were provided to me by a women of Japanese descent.

BTW, the calligraphy that was posted above is in "simplied" Chinese characters versus "complex" characters. As background, the Communist had a movement to simply Chinese writing so that the masses could be literate, so they "simplified" the writing. Simplified characters eliminated lots of strokes from the original character. For decorating purposes, I think that complex characters look better, but it depends what your customer wants. If you're doing this cake for a Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Chinese American (early immigrant) customer, complex characters are more appropriate.

SugaplumStudio, I checked out your cake and it's beautiful. I really love the Japanese Cherry Blossoms! Just one question. Here you say it's Japanese and under the photo, Chinese. Which one is it actually? I figured it's Japanese, but wanted to double check.

You're welcome. (Sort of figured you probably had your settings correct, but wanted to make sure you were sure thumbs_up.gif ).

Your cake came out great! I really like the way you incorporated the Asian symbols. Nice!
