I saw a picture recently of cupcakes that look like Christmas ornaments. From the top, they look like decorated balls. From the side, they have the regular cupcake base. I'm curious how that would be done becasue I would love to try it sometime. I usually avoid making cupcakes becasue I find them much more labor intensive than other cakes but I would be willing to make an exception for something along those lines.

I'd like to try these too. It looks like the hangy things are from fondant or gumpaste, my question is what is used to make the top of the cupcake round? Is it an overfilled cupcake, carved and then iced really smooth? Or is a fondant hat-like structure? Any info would be great!

Looking at it again, the top could be a chocolate mold.

I would say almost definetly a chocolate mould thin sugarpaste would never ever be so perfectly rounded and smooth/ brilliant

If you check the Wilton Forums --- someone did ask her how she made them but I don't know if she ever answered them, they asked right after the contest started. So I guess the only advice I can offer is to check the wilton forums for the Cupcake Ornaments or something like that... Maybe just ornaments lol. Good luck, I'd love to know too.

Would the half ball cake pan make the right size for putting on top of the cupcake? Maybe it would be too big? And the cupcake would have to be pretty flat.

I don't know if you are referring to the sports ball pan or not. However, it would be too big for a cupcake.

This is probably not going to work for these but when I was looking at the Wilton site under recipes they have a recipe for an ornament tree and they used rice crispy treats for the ball. You could easily mold the rct into a ball it's getting it smooth that would be the problem just a thought.

I was just noticing that VlyIndian made a batch and posted them in the Christmas photo gallery but she doesn't give details on how it was done.

Wonder if this pan would work, it only has very fine marks on it for the face, if you put enough icing or fondant, it could work to cover them up. Pan size are 2x2x1 1/8. Of course you need to use 2 for each ball. What do you think.

mnmmommy has some of these cupcakes in her pics. I found them by typing in "cupcakes" in the gallery. They are beautiful and she has been kind enough to give directions. Hope this helps everyone.

I used the Wilton mini ball pan to make cakes. Put the two halves together with buttercream icing. I then covered them with a layer of buttercream, and then with a layer of fondant-rolled as thin as possible. It takes several minutes of working it with you hands to get smooth. I found it impossible to smooth out all of the imperfections, but once decorated, they don't show. I used royal icing to decorate. I made the ornament tops by hand out of fondant. Once the icing hardens, paint using lusterd...

Well I bought the pumpkin pans before they posted what they used. So I guess I'll still try it since I don't have the mini ball pan. Hopefully they will work, they'll just be smaller. I'll let you know.

I get a monthly magazine, its a British one called "Cake Craft and Decoration" and this month it has a cake with Christmas Baubles exactly like those ones on the top, same decoration and everything.

They are done with those candyland moulds someone posted earlier. I would imagine those moulds were used, halved, perhaps filled with buttercream and then sat on top of the cupcakes to be decorated. Its amazing how the coloured lustre makes them look so real though isn't it.

I tried those ornament cupcakes last week, using the mini ball pan and the instructions someone posted on how to do them. I forgot who it was, or I would say so, and I can't remember the thread I was reading! Anyway, I posted a picture of my favorite one in my photos. They're a lot of work doing it this way, so I wouldn't do them that way unless it was for family. I am going to try and get the chocolate mold today.

Somewhere I read where the original person in the Wilton contest gave her instructions, now I can't find it but they're the same as mnmmommy's instructions.
