How do you get a black background behind your cakes? Do you put them on a black cloth or something when you take the picture?

Is it one poster board or more. How is it black under and around without seeing a gap between the boards? How do you photograph it without it looking like paper?

How did you both end up knowing this same technique? Is it on the site somewhere? Like, how to photograph cakes?

Thank you for your help too. I know I'm asking too many questions.

This is a science display board.... http://www.classroomproducts.com/MyScienceBoard.html You just drape the fabric over it so it creates a back drop for your picture.

I don't know if there's a link somewhere out there in cyberspace about using these boards for photographing cakes, but it is funny how many of us have thought of doing it this way!!! I just bought a board about a week ago. Still need to invest in some fabric, but I originally thought this was MY brainchild, lol. Guess I was wrong. There's at least one other thread out there where we discussed the use of science fair project boards as backdrops. My thinking originally was to use them to block out all the clutter from my photos. I want clean photos on my sites. The best thing about these boards is they store flat! Everyone can find room for one. : )
I bought mine at Micheal's for about $5. Not a bad investment at all! icon_wink.gif

I got a piece (2 yards) of cheap fabric (40% off with those mailers) at Joanns and throw it over a chair with a high backrest and place the cake on top of the seat, and take the photo, I love that way!!!

If you have a little patience, you can turn those other photos into ones with black backgounds...just use a photo editor and paste black around the cake. It takes a little practice to draw neatly around the edges, but it can make a huge difference in the appearance of the cake.

It can also disquise certain kinds of flaws in the cake.

I use the poster board too but I buy the plastic table cloths in different colors at the dollar store.

I have a few cakes with dark backgrounds but that is just because my camera sucks! LOL I usually take pics on my dark wood dining room table with my dark green curtains in the background and since the camera is no good the whole background is black! LOL

I know this is going to sound weird, but I've put my cake on the hood of my black car (in the garage) and taken photos. It's worked great! Otherwise I just drape some cloth from the corner shelf of my counter and that makes a nice backdrop too. I like the black posterboard idea...will have to try that.

My dining room table is black painted wood, so I have it easy with this one... So if you're in the market for a new table...black is a good choice for many reasons (goes with everything and photographs cakes well!!!)

My hutch is dark wood that looks black in pix. But, I usually have a bit of wall showing behind it, which I paint out with black using my paint program.

I use a black twin sheet (about $5 at Wal-Mart). The science board is a good idea. . . glad someone thought of it!
