Alright, so I think I am going to need a casket after this week. I have two weddings for Saturday and nothing is working... First, I couldn't get the color, then I thought I got it with a luster dust (NOPE). Bride is getting something that is a shade different than the color she wanted. Now, my oven is not cooperating. My cakes are getting burned around the edges, and cracking. Do I not have enough fat in the recipe or is my oven on the fritz?
So sorry you are having such hard time.
If you have time, call Cub or Rainbow or Homedepot (I'm in MN too that's why I wrote these stores) and ask if they have oven thermometers. Then run and get one. That might be your problem, I know it's mine my oven is off by almost 50 Degrees. It's 30 years old and needs to retires. But I need to sell another 20 cakes to pay for it!!
Anyhow, been there. Was making an anniversary cake and in my case the cakes were flopping. Ok it was gluten free recipe to booth, but I had to make my 8" 2 layer cake 6 times before it actually worked. I was a wreck! The other 2 cakes worked just fine, I swear it was the round cake fairy working against me!
Good Luck.
Take a deep breath, put down the spatula so no one gets hurt! It will turn out great!
You can also get an oven thermometer at Wal-mart.
For next time it's a good idea to let brides (or anyone for that matter) know that replicating a color in icing will result in variations on the shade they want. Icing and material are vastly different and that way they can't gripe later (well they can but you don't have to listen!
)
Thank you! I will have to run to the store and pick up a thermometer. ARGGG!!!
Lesson learned regarding color. That is some good advise dodibug about the variations in color. I will remember that for next time....
I feel better knowing that other people have been here.
