First Laser Tag Cake
I can't take credit for the splatter effect...I've seen that technique used on some popular cakes on the web and finally had a legitimate reason to employ...so thanks to whomever first thought of that technique and was kind enough to share with the world. The candles are sparkler candles.

Teamwork: Hubby Did Cupcakes, I Carved The Eiffel Tower, Freehand
I have never carved chocolate before, so this was my first stab at it. I was fearful when asked, but my husband is the best motivator :-) Tips: Order clay tools and wood-carving tools...they can be super cheap and work with smaller details. A dusting of an appropriate shade of luster dust, in this case antique silk, around the edges and where light hits adds antiquity and a sculptural element for contrast, so the details pop. My Lesson: Get my hands on a quality extruder! :-)

Carnival Theme: Cupcakes As Spectators
I used plastic foam/tag board(? I forget the name...it didn't have foam but it could be used in the save manner) to create the backdrop/cupcake stand. Hot glue and triangular supports made from the board reinforced any weak spot, so remember foam board in the future, for affordable stands. They can be painted, cut in myriad shapes...possibilities are endless. Tip: the more vertical or horizontal cuts that are made through the top layer(don't cut all the way through!) the more curved that piece becomes, for rounded shapes/structures.

Practice: You'll Never Guess What's Underneath
I wanted to practice ruffles, so...I did. Lesson: Make sure ruffles are flush with top edge of the cake being covered. Tip: every 3rd or 4th ruffle strip, take a scalpel or the like and make 1-2mm long cuts (vertical) along the edge before ruffling with a ball tool. It makes it look more like fabric...like a Ralph Lauren skirt. Although, for a clean, elegant wedding, maybe not the route to go.:-)

Justin Bieber Cake: Trying My Hand At Cake Carving/sculpting (January 2013)
(January 2013) A good friend loved Justin Bieber and all she asked for was the cake he was holding, but I decided to practice cake carving and sculptures (secretly vying to throw it away were it an epic fail) he is 70-80% edible chocolate brownie, and his skin is a butterscotch concoction:-) I had a BLAST working on him!
