Based loosely on a toy my son has. My first real attempt at anything other than square or circle. I also took some inspiration from aimers Optimus Prime cake, but hers was much better!
Umm, My First Attempt At Whimsy
Yeah, uh, so this idea was taken directly from the Whimsical Bakehouse, yet beside the modge podge of colors, it does not resemble it much. This is my first attempt at a Whimsical cake and it was pretty darn crooked (but did manage to stay up!). My coworkers (It was for the July birthdays) thought it looked like a Dr. Seuss cake (without my prodding - I promise) , so I'm "okay" with the way it turned out.
Yup, it's my current cake obsession. I am trying to become quicker and better at this stuff and the results are mixed. I am overall satisfied with this cake. It is chocolate fudge cake with chocolate buttercream and white raspberry with lemon buttercream. It's small, the biggest layer is 8". Oh and I didn't intend ons smoothing it well. I also wanted to do a wedding style cake for the first time.
Red And White
I am really just practicing scrolls. I want to find my own style, I think I like my last cake better. This is a lemon pound cake with strawberry buttercream filling, IMBC (lemon flavored) frosting, and buttercream roses and scrolls.
Pink And Brown
There are a ton of oopsies on this cake. I wanted to try out Toba Garrett's chocolate buttercream, practice bc roses and scrolls, so it is really messy. THe cake is chocolate fudge with raspberry buttercream filling and chocolate buttercream frosting.
Easter Cake For My Lil Man
I felt so bad sending off the earlier easter cake that I just made today, that I had to make a smaller version for my son. I had all that white space and didn't know what to do so I went a little crazy with the grass, and the eggs, and the flowers, and everything! LOL. SO much fun though! Yeah, I know there is still lot's of white space on the board, but my hands were seriously falling off at this point that I didn't care!
This was such a fun cake for me. I had a great time making it. The flowers are fondant, bunny is fondant/gumpaste and the carrots are gumpaste. The frosting is all lemon buttercream, and the cake is lemon pound cake and white cake with lemon flavoring (had an "accident' with one of the layers so I had to make another layer and all I had was white cake!)
Birthday cake for a five year old boy. Bottom is Chocolate fudge cake with cookies and cream filling (made from reg buttercream), Top is WASC with regular buttercream. The "Head" is Rice Krispy Treat covered in Fondant. Cake is covered in Fondant.
Just made this cake to practice different types of free-handing scrolls. Not easy, but each time I get a *little* better (emphasis on *little*). It's a 6" WASC cake with raspberry cream cheese buttercream filling and all buttercream frosting; gumpaste rose. Now I must go eat it!
I Shall Call Thee...ugh!
This is completely unfinished and very rough around the edges, but it's free so it's going as is. Bottom layer is chocolate fudge cake with cookies and cream buttercream. Top layer is WASC with raspberry cream cheese buttercream. Covered in Fondant. Poker chips and dice are gumpaste.
Just uploading this so I can analyze it with a fresh head from work tomorrow! I refuse to let the dragon/castle cake get the better of me and will be recreating it next weekend. Practice gumpaste and fondant dragon.
This was a disaster. I only completed half the cake because it had a "run-in" with a stray pillow from our couch (don't ask). It was impossible to work with after that so I had to make do. It's inspired by Debbie Brown and is supposed to have a top and not be so decrepit, but oh well. Sponge cake with buttercream frosting and fondant. Dragon is fondant and fondant/gumpaste mixture (yep, forgot to finish his tail).
Brown And Blue Dots
Just for fun. Giving this to my neighbor. White almond sour cream cake with raspberry cream cheese buttercream filling and buttercream top. Fondant ribbon roses and wire thingees.
Brown And Pink
I was just playing around and am going to give this to my friend tomorrow. It's a 6" white almond and sour cream cake with raspberry cream cheese buttercream frosting and raspberry flavored fondant. I tried to make chocolate raspberry fondant but it fell apart on me.
Cake For My Little Valentine
This is just a mini-cake that I made for my son. I got the idea from here; he requested a pink cake for the next cake I made, so I made him his own Valentine's day pink cake. Chocolate fudge cake with buttercream.
One is yellow with reg buttercream icing, the other is chocolate with mint cookies and creme filling. I was in such a hurry, trying to do too much at one time (and actually had planned to do AT LEAST three of these) and this whole deal was pretty much a disaster (my ganache covered cake was even worse, MUCH worse than this). No more weeknight decorating for me! PS the pink heart is purposely blurred like that ;)
I made this for a bachelorette party for a friend of a friend. It is not the original idea I had in mind, but when the fondant wouldn't cooperate, this is what happened. You can't really see the full top in the picture. It's chocolate fudge cake with cookies and cream filling and fondant.
This is just a quick mini "wedding" cake I threw together as a sort of joke for a coworker (it is sitting on a dessert plate). She really loves hearts and is constantly teased about her wedding date (she is dating our boss). The cake is covered in yucky Wilton fondant and is just plain yellow with piping buttercream filling (EEEW! What can I say, it was from scraps!) Sorry for the worlds worst photoshop crop job, I'm supposed to be in bed right now!
This is for my boss's birthday and to celebrate the anniversary that our office opened here (they used to be in Biloxi, until Katrina). His girlfriend requested balloons so I had to make the two themes work together. Tried the two different MMF's, using real marshmallows (bottom) vs Fluff worked better for me as you can see! Bottom is yellow cake/bc top is chocolate fudge with cookies and cream filling YUM! (top says Happy Birthday Gary)
Good Idea Gone Wrong
I am really embarassed to upload this, but I figured this might be one of those things I'll look back on and laugh at. I started with a cool idea, but about 1/4 way through the flowers realized it wasn't happening on this cake; so it's a modge podge instead. At least I got some more practice smoothing buttercream (though you can't tell after I messed with it) and making gumpaste flowers. Strawberry flavored yellow cake with buttercream frosting. Oh yeah, and gumpaste flowers.
I needed to make this cake before the cake went bad, so I was completely in a hurry and it's very ugly - 3rd decorated cake. Covered in buttercream chocolate fudge cake with gumpaste flowers. Yep, I know bc eats gumpaste but bc roses were not my thing today. Please excuse the mess. I didn't have enough buttercream made to do everything I wanted so in several places I had to improvise and use colors I would not have liked to.
My second cake and first attempt at fondant. There are a LOT of mistakes, including the fondant drying out too much before smoothing, It looks wet, because well, it is. I was trying to smooth out the cracks in the fondant and was using water to apply the dots. Yellow cake w/ plain buttercream filling and fondant.
