Hat Cake
This was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting--my best friend's favorite, and since it was her birthday cake this year, it seemed appropriate. I purchased the royal icing flowers; I was going to make my own but I saw those when I was getting the drum and decided I liked them. I did paint them up myself. The cake is an 8" round with a 4" round carved for the brim of the hat.

Mom's 2009 Birthday Cake
I started with a from-scratch yellow cake that used vanilla bean paste for flavoring. It's two layers, torted and filled with hazelnut-flavored italian meringue buttercream. The basketweave and rope border are Belgian milk chocolate italian meringue buttercream, and the flowers are plain vanilla italian meringue buttercream. I liked this cake a lot better when I hadn't looked at it in twelve hours or so!

Topsy Turvy Polka-Dots
This was for my best friend's birthday last September--I thought I'd lost the photos! It was chocolate WASC with milk chocolate SMBC. I THINK it had chocolate creme filling, too. The polka dots and hello kitty head are all fondant, and the pink is just buttercream--it was supposed to represent the feather boa on the balloon her boyfriend sent her at work. Don't know if it worked quite right, but it still looks cool.

Going-Away Pillow Cake
I made this for my cousin Lisa, who is going to Australia for grad school. It's yellow-chocolate marble cake with belgian chocolate SMBC and hazelnut-flavored MMF. The crown is white chocolate with sugar pearls, taken from a template by Dennysse. The cake on top has kangaroos stenciled on top; I think I need lots more practice with stencils!
