Chips, Queso, And Margaritas!
Margarita glass is filled with essentially a giant cake ball mixture of strawberry cake and strawberry buttercream. Fondant strawberry with piped royal icing seeds and gum paste leaves. Rim of the glass is coated in sanding sugar. Queso bowl is lemon cake with vanilla buttercream filling. Queso on top is colored vanilla buttercream, as is the guacamole. Ground beef is dark chocolate buttercream with crushed chocolate graham crackers mixed in. Chip basket is made from gum paste strips that I wove together. Chips are a fondant/modeling chocolate mixture with large black sugar crystals mixed in to resemble the black spots on real tortilla chips. Tissue paper is wafer (rice) paper so it's edible too! Only the margarita glass and straw are inedible.

Band Cake
Cake for the wonderful band teachers at my son's school. Top tier is vanilla cake, bottom tier is luscious lemon cake. Both have vanilla buttercream filling and are covered and decorated with fondant. Gumpaste note topper and tuba bell. Cake separator is an acrylic container that I filled with a homemade sprinkle mix of the school colors - the black ones are music notes! Tuba bell is filled with custom M&Ms - school colors, and the red and white ones have either the school initials or a music note on them. Music on the bottom tier is the first few measures of the Imperial March for the tuba. Nerve wracking to assemble, but I'm super happy with how it turned out!

Kindergarten Birthday Cake
I let my daughter design their own cake this year. Let her choose everything - down to the ribbon on the cake board and the picture backdrop. She decided on a cake with a beaver swimming below, and an tuba and a trumpet saying "Hi" to each other on top. Quite a bit of randomness going there, and I love it. Perfect kindergartener logic! :) Six inch chocolate fudge cake with mint buttercream filling, covered and decorated with fondant. Gum paste tuba and trumpet that are brushed with edible luster dust. I included pictures of their drawings (along with my notes). Had a blast creating it!

Spikey Birthday Cake
I let my son design his own birthday cake this year. Let him choose everything - down to the ribbon on the cake board and the picture backdrop. He likes spikes and he'll find and point them out where ever he goes - cacti, spines on a crocodile, the tip of a pen. His cake design fits him perfectly. He chose a fully spiked out cake with a freaked out face on the cake board. Six inch vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream filling, covered and decorated with fondant. Used the Marvelous Molds brick wall onlay for the brick pattern. Hand made about 300 spikes to decorate everything. Put them in a bag with edible bronze luster dust, shook them around, then sprayed them with edible shellac to set the dust. I included pictures of his drawing (along with my notes). Had a blast creating it!

Chocolate Ornaments
Chocolate ornaments with edible lace decorations. Ball is made from colored white chocolate that's melted and molded. The ball is then brushed with edible sparkly dust, and then coated with an edible shellac. Lace the new Evil Cake Genius brand that can be cooked in the microwave instead of the oven. So much fun to make. I see all the flaws in them, but for a first effort, I'm really pleased with how they came out.

Rather than ask what her favorite books are, I thought it'd be more fun to be creative with the titles. :) Book stack is a dark chocolate fudge cake with dark chocolate buttercream filling. Smaller book is made from Rice Krispies Treats "glued" together with dark chocolate. Both "books" are covered and decorated with fondant White chocolate apple with a fondant stem. Notebook paper is wafer (rice) paper with edible marker lines.

Mad Scientist Cake
Mad scientist cake for my son's science teacher! I made one similar to this a few years ago and enjoyed making it so much that I decided to do a variation of it this time. Cake is supposed to resemble a large beaker. Six inch chocolate fudge cake with dark chocolate buttercream filling, covered and decorated with fondant. Her favorite color is yellow, but I think we all know what a beaker filled with yellow liquid would resemble (ahem), so I changed the colors so it would (hopefully) look like orange liquid with yellow gas and bubbles. Bubbles are painted with edible luster dust. White chocolate brain and maggots, each colored with some powdered food coloring. Gel frosting blood. White chocolate skull and crossbones. Glass vials are filled them with sprinkles and colored water. Glass syringe, and plastic petri dish. She loved it! Had lots of fun with all the details.
