Learn how to make this easy and super cool smoking volcano cake - perfect for Hawaiian Luau themed parties and Dinosaur events! Yet another awesome idea for how you can use your giant cupcake mold!
You can also carve this cake using 2 x 6" round x 3" high cakes. This cake serves about 12 people.
Tools & Equipment:
- Cake Board (I used a 9" square)
- Plastic toy dinosaurs & trees (I got them from the toy section of Kmart in Australia - $15 for 200 pieces!)
- Wire rack / cooling rack
- Baking Tray
- Bread knife
- Serrated edge knife
- Butter knife
- Circle cutter (I used a 2.5")
- Scissors
- 2 x Zip lock bags
For smoking effect:
- Shot glass or small container (plastic or glass, it doesn't matter)
- Medicine dropper
- Dried ice pellets (check online for your nearest supplier - mine were $8 for a whole kilo!)
Ingredients:
- Giant Cupcake, baked as per our tutorials below (I used a chocolate mud cake recipe for mine)
- Dark chocolate ganache (recipe below
- White chocolate ganache (recipe below) - Half coloured red, half coloured orange. You can use liquid, gel or paste colours for this.
- Ganache Recipes:
- White Ganache: 600g white chocolate + 200ml whipping cream
- Dark Ganache: 400g dark chocolate + 200ml whipping cream
- Combine cream and chocolate - microwave for 1 minute at a time until all ingredients are melted - about 3-4 minutes total. You can also use a saucepan to heat the cream till it boils, then remove from heat and pour chocolate into the saucepan, stirring till its completely melted.

This also works quite well using the Wilton Doll Cake pan...Less carving..... I use the dry ice and pour jello water over it. The Jello first smokes and then as it sets it turns into bubbles that slide down the cake . No harm to the fondant. .http://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/3266578/fantasy-island-volcano-cake-really-works
