AWhat cake flavor would compliment a peanut butter filling? Am looking for something unusual but yummy, not a boring vanilla cake...

Oh man....that sounds sooooo good!    I have all those ingredients and cannot believe I haven't tried this combination.  That will be fixed VERY soon.   Thanks for posting, vldutoit.

Julia~~Dulce de leche is actually a Mexican/Spanish phrase for sweet milk or caramel.  La Lechera (Nestle) makes a fabulous dulce de leche caramel in a can that is available in the USA and Mexico.  Here is a link to the product on Walmart so you can see what the can looks like.  You MUST be sure that the can says Dulce de Leche or you may end up with a similar product that is NOT caramel, just sweetened condensed milk.

That sounds incredible. I'm imagining a little chopped salted peanuts mixed into the dulce de leche too....

AI have actually boiled sweetened condensed milk in a pot of water for 4 hours ( unopened of course) to get something similar to the canned when I couldn't get my hands on the canned and it turned out ok but the texture wasn't quite the same

ACake flavor for PB filling? Vanilla and chocolate aside, Strawberry cake, or take your usual vanilla cake and add plenty of ground cinnamon, Or that same vanilla cake and sub out all butter for browned butter. I make sriracha peanut butter cookies that are awesome, but don't know how well that'd translate to cake.....

AVlditoit, I think the condensed milk needs to be open in order to thicken. Rfisher, yes, good idea using the vanilla cake as a base and add flavor. I love anything with cinnamon -you got me - but do kids...? If it wouldn't be for kids, I would probably pair it with white chocolate and champagne ganache

AActually, the condensed milk will thicken whether the can is open or not. A lot of people prefer to cook it open to eliminate the risk of the can exploding - but you can usually avoid this by keeping the water topped up in the pan.

The dulce de leche is made by the sugars in the condensed milk caramelising rather than simple evaporation of water from the milk. The caramelisation occurs due to the long slow cooking.

Enough science, it's delicious too!

Yes, there is that.  I always want to go all out with different flavor profiles in the same cake.  However, since most of my hobby cakes are for family and kids, forget it.   Vanilla or chocolate or lemon.  That's it.  Anything else?   Nope.

....whoopee....

AAnd for strawberry cake, I'd use preserves. Take some of the batter to lighten up the preserves and swirl it in the vanilla cake. Instead of making the whole cake strawberry. I think it gives a bigger flavor punch.

AFinally...! I bought sweetened condensed milk and made dolce de leche :) Looks a bit lumpy but I read to put it in the mixer will help. It taste Devine! Naughty stuff... Of course hubby came home the moment I got it out of the oven. How do they always time that anyway??? Have to hide quickly or it'll be gone in no time ;) Was trying to upload picture, but my phone is refusing. Will try again. How long does it stay well in the fridge?

I could just eat that with a spoon!  When I was a kid, I would eat the sweetened condensed milk straight from the can with a spoon too.
