I tried to buy some Americolor gel coloring at GSA and I was told they are phasing it out so the owner can sell his own line. Anybody tried it? I am completely happy with Americolor, especially when making non bitter red and and black, and not sure I want to jump into a new line.

Yet another reason to not buy from GSA. That is too bad! I just went to the website and there they are, all Alan Tetreault colors. I haven't tried them. Frankly, I am too happy with Americolor to bother paying shipping to try a new kind of color. Easier to just pay someone else shipping to get Americolor that I know will work. Will be watching to see if anyone else has tried them though.
It's entirely possible that he's still selling Americolor but it's being labelled with his own name. A lot of people have arrangements with manufacturers to do personal brand labelling but it's the same product. It might be worth buying one to see what it's like before you decide to not order it.
Edited to add: It's unlikely that he's manufacturing the colors himself, so he must have someone doing it for him, and it's probably someone who makes them already, is what I'm saying.
I understand wanting to sell your own product, but this seems a bit underhanded. Get rid of the other brands so people are forced to buy your own? It's frustrating because I love buying from them. Guess I'll look around to see who else sells Americolor now. :(
It's not underhanded at all, it's done hundreds of times a day every day! Generics in the grocery store are often manufactured by the same factory that makes the brand names and they just put different labels on them. There's a manufacturer that I get flavored oils from who will do runs of labelled items for you...I could have a full range of "Kara's lemon oil" or whatever if I wanted to sell it. You just go to the manufacturer and arrange to buy it directly from them with your label in order to avoid a middleman (which in this case would be Americolor) and it increases your profit in the end.
A very well-known decorator got his fondant from another company and slapped his label on it. He wasn't making it himself, he was buying it from another company. He was also charging a bunch more and people were paying it...I know about that because I know the original manufacturer, but I'm sure there are a ton of other examples of people buying bulk and labelling things on their own.
Just to add...I once checked the labels on butter that I got from Walmart and the brand name. They both had the same wrappers on the sticks, and when I compared them both had come from the same factory and lot, they just had different labels. And the brand name was more expensive for the same thing!

There's a chance he is repackaging Americolor, but when I spoke to the customer service girl today, she said they were getting rid of Americolor and replacing it with the owner's line. I was clearly not happy (I wasn't rude) and she never once said, don't worry it's the same exact food coloring.
I actually just noticed that today as well; went looking for a "poppy" red colour in Americolor. It's completely up to GSA; however, I will say, they lost my sale today because of it, and I probably would have picked up a few more things as well, but instead went elsewhere.
I'm sure their "own brand" is fine, but quite honestly I am not paying the shipping, and import taxes when it arrives to "give 'er a try".

Just got off the phone with a GSA representative. They confirmed that the Alan Tetreault color is not just repackaged Americolor and were nice enough to read off the ingredients to me. Definitely different from Americolor. While not the exact same as Wilton, seemed to be more similarity there than with Americolor. Disappointing for sure.

Thanks for that info. Luckily I don't have to buy food coloring that often, but when I do I'll have to order from somewhere different.
I'm not opposed to them wanting to sell their line, but to get rid of another brand in hopes of forcing you to buy theirs is not sitting well with me.
Also to add- I had a pop up message while I was trying to buy some Magic Line butter flavoring on their site. I asked the same person about it and she said that they were phasing out some of the different sizes of Magic Line. I hope this isn't headed in the same direction as the food coloring. Then I will really have to stop ordering there. Can't live without my Magic Line!
