Morning all!

I have just had a bride send me this picture as something she really likes (the gold sequin-looking section on the bottom tier).  Does anyone know what this is made of?  Can you now buy pre-made edible gold sequins?  I guess you could cut out tiny little circles with a piping nozzle and make something that looked like this but I can't imagine that being cost effective...(and my fingers hurt at the thought of it!).  I was wondering if this is something maybe new to market and had not made it to the UK shores yet...

I guess it could be just someone made a dummy cake and covered it in plastic sequins for effect but I'm being optimistic today... :-D

Many thanks everyone!  xx

This cake is by Cotton & Crumbs and according to their facebook pages this is edible gold sequins and if you google you will find that.  I do have a tutorial on how to do them but looks very time consuming http://confessionsofascratchbaker.blogspot.com/2011/05/my-first-tutorialgelatin-sequins.html

I feel like a right muppet now...I spent ages looking for these things but couldn't find them!  Doh!  Useful find on the make-your-own though so thank you very much.  I don't think I'd have the patience to cut all of those...i get frustrated enough making strips of fondant for ruffles...thankfully it seems you can get pre-made gold ones :-)  Thank you!!

@Dayti Ebay!  Looks like Rainbow Dust make them... you would need a LOT of viles and at 3.95 a throw, it wouldn't be cheap, but it's doable :-)

Ah, Rainbow Dust, cool, thank you. You could also try it like this http://thecakeblog.com/2014/06/diy-gold-sequin-cake.html but I think they have better gold colours in the US than we can get in the UK/Europe. None of my gold dusts are that shiny!

Nope, mine don't look like that either!  I might try mixing it in with the piping gel though...never thought of that.  Maybe the shine on the gel would bring out the shimmer in the dust.  Oooh...experimenting!!

I'd do it by purchasing edible gold luster dust and spray and then color the small round pastel confetti/quins.

I would spray an edible sheet with gold airbrush paint on both sides, letting each side dry before spraying the other side. If it's not shiny enough for you, you could dry dust with 24 kt powder. Once dry, use a small paper punch to punch out lots of gold sequins.

AIf you search youtube for edible sequins there's a good video. It's a gelatine mixture mixed with colour and sparkly bits which you just pipe in dots. I imagine that one you get into the flow it's relatively quick and easy.
