AHi all.

I am making a peppa pig shaped cake for a friend. I am going to print the picture to size and cut the cake around the template.

Would it be better to cut the cake when it's half frozen, frozen or thawed?

Also, is fondant icing a square cake and different shapes very difficult?

Hi Vicky,

I made a 2D Peppa Pig cake a while back and did the same thing. I printed off a picture and just cut around it with a sharp knife to get the right shape. I held the picture in place with simple cocktail sticks.

I almost always freeze my cakes and often cut when they are still very cold. I like to leave them out of the freezer for a while before i start carving and filling, that way they are still chilled and firm but not rock solid.

I found that covering the cake below was very easy even thought it is an odd shape.

Hope this helps!

AThat helps a lot. Thank you.

Oh wow, that Peppa píg cake looks amazing!

I find fondant icing really useful for oddly shoaed cakes, it seems ot mould around very easily and can hide any bits that are a bit misshapen, something that happens a lot with my cakes ;)

I think from memory i used sheet pans (baking tray size) and just cut around the whole shape in one go.

If you wanted to though i'm sure you could use an 8inch round and a 7 inch square and do the head and dress separately?

The square dress shape would be pretty easy to carve around and you should have enough to build up the nose area from an 8inch round.

I used rolled fondant for the outline, i'm not particularly good at piping!

I rolled pieces of fondant into sausages and then used my fondant smoother to roll them nice and even so the lengths were the same thickness.

I did this to make most of the details too, legs, arms, mouth & tail.

Good luck with your cake, make sure you post photos!

AI used one 12 inch square cake pan, drew the picture and cut around it. I chilled the cake overnight and it was so easy to cut. X

AThanks. No they aren't, I did cut the ears out of cake but figured they'd be very tricky to cover in fondant so I just made them out of fondant and stuck them on after id covered the head in fondant. X
