I've looked at a ton at cake carriers on Amazon and none seem to fit a 12 inch cake- any suggestions for a good secure carrier.

Thanks!

Depends on whether you need a professional appearance, or one that does the job.

I am a hobby baker and use the following system for cakes that are too large/too tall for a traditional cake carrier.

Purchase a Sterilite 30 Gallon Storage Box, about $7-9.  Be sure it has a clear box (you must be able to see through it!) with an opaque lid.   [here's a link to show you the product]:

Purchase a roll of rubberized shelf liner from a Dollar Store similar to this:

PUT THE LID ON YOUR STERILITE BOX AND TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN.  Cut a piece of shelf liner to fit the inside of the ex-lid.  Your new "cake carrier" will be approximately 32 L x 19" W x 17" H and will accommodate large cakes.  It will be a clean, safe, way to transport cakes larger than 10", and will allow you to check the condition of the cake because it is  "see through".

Before placing in the car, I put down another piece of rubberized shelf liner on the floor of my van to make sure the "cake carrier" doesn't move.

Or, for a more professional appearance, you can purchase a new, clean box from U-Haul.  Here is an example with a piece of rubberized shelf liner underneath the cake board.   I placed a label on the top of the

box and fastened with tape.

Thanks Apti - those are good ideas for big cakes. I probably should have been more specific. I live in a NYC apartment and have already taken over too much room with my baking supplies. What I am looking for something is smaller- basically a good standard cake carrier that will fit a double layer 12 inch cake with fondant/frosting on it- that snaps in- that transports well in a cab/stroller. Everything I see is only for an 8 or 9 inch.

I am a hobby baker. I  often do a 2 layer 12 inch round with fondant decorations for the top (which I place in a separate box). The size is the biggest problem as everything I have found only seems to fit smaller sized cakes. Anyone find a good carrier that fits the 12 inch rounds- preferably 8-10 inches high.

Thanks!

Glad I read this thread!  Apti - thank you so much.  I've used the clear rubbermaid storage box before but DUH I used it right side up - which is nice in the car but my back doesn't appreciate the lifting of the cake!

Julie - can you use the underbed storage size and, you know, store the box under your bed!  And keep your oversize pans in there when you don't need them!

You are very welcome, Theresa.  I was thinking "inside the box" (----baaaaad pun......)

Julie--with your specific needs, you may be better served by looking outside the world of cake supplies (tool boxes, container store, etc.).  12" x 4" can be pretty darn heavy!.   Good luck.

Sorry for my late reply- been busy in a baking frenzy this week- this looks perfect- especially the fact that it folds down for storage. It would be very handy if a cupcake holder too b/c mine is falling apart. I like the hat box idea too if this doesn't work.

As to the under the bed storage- we have a storage bed with drawers so i don't have the room for it. All great ideas- will remember if i ever move to a house! With 3 kids in a 2 br apartment- it really cramps my baking!

I just found the pop up carrier on amazon so i will be doing that!

Thanks for the great ideas!
