You can do it whenever, you just need to be more careful when the sugarpaste is fresh as it will mark at the drop of a hat. My fresh boards are often decorated with a few butterflies or flowers. They're not there to hide the finger marks, honest

You can use a little piping gel, apply it very lightly and you fondant will stick to it very nicely.

Vegetable shortening (crisco) . Is circumstances allow me to get the board back, I can just lift the old fondant off very easily and in one piece.
