The jist of the letter tells me that in today's day and age we have a lot of security problems with CC and hacking and this whole fear mongering with what happened with Target recently... So if I want to feel more secure in processing my clients accounts I can pay an ADDITIONAL fee to add extra security.

By the time I was finished reading this letter I was imagining a little mom and pop store being shook down by the local punks and hearing, "If you want to buy some protection you got to give up the money"..

Ugh!!! I hate being nickle and dimed and I really hate it when someone tries to make me feel like I should be paranoid.

That's really what it sounds like. I think I'd tell them if providing the utmost protection isn't already happening, I'll take my business elsewhere and thank them for letting me know I'm with a poor quality service. Merchant services companies are typically as low as the fungus that lives under the slime.

I don't know what "extra protection" you would be paying for - all credit card processing companies and POS systems already have to comply with fairly strict regulations (called PCI compliance standards).  What more are they going to do?

This was my first thought... then my second thought was... "What are they NOT doing?"

They're just selling one of those credit monitoring services, you don't have to buy it. They'll still contact you if they think something funky is happening. I get calls from them occasionally checking to see if I actually made a purchase or not, and I don't pay extra for anything.
