It seriously hurts my heart when I get a call 3 weeks before an event from a person who's wedding got out of hand with guests and they need a cake for 250-300 people and have a budget of 200. And I, have to say "No". and then all of a sudden my heart no longer is feeling so bad when they end the conversation with ... "Well we picked you at the show because your cake was so good, but the good thing is there was no lack of other decorators. We will call them"
Good Freaking luck.
Ugh but this makes me so mad!!
AWhy do people feel the need to take EVERYTHING personal and to offence????! Yes you're a good decorator which means you'll have no shortage of clients :-)
Pricing is a reality of doing business. it shouldn't hurt your heart, you are realistic.

I have no problem saying no to someone, but sometimes when I get the "sob" story and spend a little too long on the call and I am willing to bend a little on price, make concessions and even adjust things I normally wouldn't, it bothers me. This cake would have brought an introduction to a new venue and 250-300 other potential clients. So I tried to work with them, but when he turned rude and petty by pretty much saying we are a dime a dozen and he will find someone else to do his cake, it stung. I may be soft hearted, but rudeness still pinches. It won't bother me tonight, or tomorrow or really ever again, but in the moment where he hung up and I set the phone down I am again reminded that people like that are only looking to us to fill a need and not an important one, people like that still think cake is just a box you buy off a shelf.
AI just re-read what I wrote and I hope you didn't think my comment was a dig at you lol. I meant to say that the client was obviously offended that you had turned him down and had acted pretty childish, you shouldn't worry because you are very good at your work and will have plenty more clients that will appreciate you xx
They were being rude because they couldn't get what they wanted...reminds me of a whiny first-grader, but I know it must have been awful on the phone.
So typical with the culture we have become. People think they are entitled to get what they want even if they can't afford it....

*snork*
AI don't think you need to worry about 250 potential clients who are friends with a person like this. Those are not your people.
