Hi 

Looking for a good , solid,  reliable turntable. ( for heavy 12 " cakes  and smaller )

Do they need to tilt for pipping , or is it just as easy to be upright.?

Worried tilting will affect stability

Any recommendations , ?

I have an Ateco pedestal turning decorating stand, but my favorite to use is a wooden IKEA lazy susan, it's great for large cakes.

I'm planning on ordering this one, I hate the one I have it's just too flimsy but it was a cheap replacement. I don't know about the tilting kinds, I saw the one Wilton has and thought about purchasing it but I worried about the same thing. I'd put the money into a nice one, otherwise you'll end up with a few unstable turntables. There's also one from Ateco (I think that's the brands name) it seems very sturdy and durable.

AThat's what IndyDebs link is to, it's a nice lazy susan with a ceramic type top! I was using my aunts but she took it back and I've been looking for another one for ages!

i also have an ateco. its had 16 years of use and is still the same. the base is heavy/sturdy and there has never been any rust on  it.

We use the Ateco 12" and 18" cast iron base turntables. It is difficult to find the 18" size. But buy all you can when you do.

I was looking at the Fat Diddio's  Pro  12 "  with a cast iron base and an aluminium top ( Ball Bearing turn ) seems to have very good reviews and sold out in a lot of online stores.

Will now hunt down the ateco,

That's mine! LOVE IT.

I love the Fat Daddio's with the ball bearings.  I have the center spike Ateco and when there is considerable weight on it, it looses speed enough not to make a full revolution without another push/pull.  The FD one will keep turning. 

I have the IKEA wood one, and I don't know if I have an off one, but I get a wobble and it isn't engineered to stay level. Not that I'd expect a >$10 turntable to be able to stand up to a level, but this is not a precision tool.
