So, I am fairly new at cake decorating (this is my third cake to decorate) and my 5 yr old wants me to make a "Super Dad" cake for Father's Day.  I have the blue and the yellow icing to the colors that I want but I am having holy heck with the red.  I am trying to get it to be bold but bright (hope that makes sense).  I am doing a Superman Logo to give you an idea of the red I am trying to achieve.  I am using the Wilton Snow White Buttercream icing.  I look forward to any advice please! icon_sad.gif

The color will intensify into a deeper color after it sits a while. I also like to use AmeriColor Super Red. I have better luck with a really rich red with it than I do the Wilton.

Thank you!  After reading some other blogs I am going to get some of the AmeriColor Super Red (I just ordered some off of Amazon)!  What do you recommend for time for the color to "develop"?

I usually make dark/bright colored frosting the night before I want to use it, but probably a few hours would be enough to let you know if you need to add more color. For fondant, I like to give it a full 24 hours.

Post pics when you finish the cake, it's a cute idea for Father's Day! :)

Thanks Six!  I uploaded the other two cakes that I have made.  This was my son's idea and I am elaborating on his idea.  I am hoping it turns out as cute as it sounds.  I made all of my colored frostings today, I am just nervous that the red isn't going to be the red that I want, which is why I have the AmeriColor Super Red on order, thanks to Amazon Prime it will be here tomorrow.

AJust a reminder to be careful with the amount of red (and sometimes blue too) that you use as it can give the frosting a bitter or metallic taste. Even enough Wilton "no taste" red will taste off if you use enough. Also, Americolor Tulip Red is their "no taste" red, but it doesn't say that on the label.

I actually had a lot of trouble with red particularly awhile back. I was using regular food coloring from the store and I could never get dark colors in my icing! When I kept adding color it eventually made the icing runny and weird. So then I switched to chefmaster brand gel coloring that I found online in big bottles for pretty cheap. Now I just add like a dab of color and its quite dark. I'm sure theres lots of other good food coloring brands/types out there that would also work though.

I should also mention that I am new to cake decorating as well, I've made about 14 cakes in the last 3 months.
