Hi Everyone! I'm fairly new to decorating cakes. I usually just do the basics and I've been taking the Wilton classes at a local Michael's store (I will be taking the 3rd course in March). My friend asked me if I could make a cake for her nephews' 4th birthday in a couple of weeks. The theme is the movie How To Train Your Dragon. My friend bought some cake toppers from ebay from the movie and it showed a picture of a cake. It looks pretty cool and simple enough but I was just wondering how I could recreate the waves that are under the boat in the picture and on the sides of the cake. The mountains that are in the corner of the cake are made of frosting and it was airbrushed those different colors. I don't own an airbrush machine and not sure if it's worth the money right now. I was thinking I would maybe use Wilton's color mists. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them! Thank you :) -Jennifer

I'm still quite new to decorating too, but could you mix a white, and a couple of shades of blue fondant to a marble effect and roll out (maybe a thin long roll of white, then light blue after that, then a small roll of darker blue then the lighter blue and then the white again and roll it out together) ?  or using a blue dust on white fondant?

hope that makes sense too :)   Good luck and have fun!

It is simple... sides are combed with a cake comb, and a spatula is dragged through BC under the boat.

Lea- Thanks for the suggestion! That might be more difficult then it needs to be for the cake but it sounds like fun to try. I'll definitely keep that in mind :)

CWR41- Awesome thank you! I thought about dragging a spatula through buttercream for the waves under the boat but the sides still had me at a loss but thank you for the suggestion of a cake comb! I'm definitely going to try that. :)

Well maybe you can understand why it is not a good idea to promise to "recreate" any cake picture.

The top looks like spatula painting with softened buttercream.  I have no idea how those sides were done.

The only way you can really know is to email the person who created that cake--and hope that they will tell you more or less how they did the sides.
