Does anyone know what those clear, plastic sheets are called that I've seen people place fondant in between and then roll. It looks like clear vinyl or something and it helps fondant not stick. I'm not sure where I could find these and if they are worth it?? I appreciate any info. Thanks.

You can find them at http://sweetwise.com/the-mat.html?gclid=CNKb3-emsbUCFQGunQodo2UAHw .  It is called "The Mat".  I have no experience with them, but they are very popular, many people on here swear by them.

Hi 1980

I purchased "THE MAT" - a set of 2 clear plastic sheets  - to roll fondant. I bought it online last year from a company in Ireland, however you can buy it direct from www.sweetwise.com  Sweetwise do a great tutorial which is well worth watching, BEFORE using THE MAT. You can view the demo on their website.

There was a thread started on Cake Central a few weeks ago regards to THE MAT - if you do a search on CC you should fine it. Respones to this post very helpful.

There are also other types of MAT available, but I can only comment on the Sweetwise brand -  very happy with it, and money well spent  - it has put the joy and confidence into rolling out fondant!

Hope this helps!

The MAT looks really cool, but is there a more in-expensive way of rolling out fondant to perfection?

I bake only as a hobby and only occasionally and i'm also searching for a fondant rolling mat. I've heard of people using clear vinyl table cloth sheets but not sure how effective that is.

As far as I know The Mat is the only thing on the market that is food safe.  Regular vinyl can be treated with chemicals that can leach into the fondant.  I know that some people just use vinyl from the craft store, but I personally like to stick with food safe products.  I don't use anything but a fondant rolling pin and some corn starch, takes some practice, but I am happy with the results.  One day I may spring for The Mat

I got the mini mat, it was $6 plus shipping on eBay. It's 15" wide, so big enough for most home bakers.
