If you do not have a cutter in the correct shape of the accent pieces what I do is draw a template on paper, and use that to cut my shapes out of fondant. Then I'd just attach with gum glue or water and smooth.

AOnce you complete 30 of these you'll understand why $33542987897575 each would have been justified.

NO!

I'd be looking at a MINIMUM of $15 CAD.

But I actually think leah_s is nearer the mark with her price!!!!!!!!!

AI would charge $12 each at the MINIMUM. Those will take quite a long time to complete. If you charge $4.50, you will lose money. Remember your time is valuable.

leah's got it!

if i counted right there's at least 30 precise cuts of fondant in each cake in three various colors

30 times 30 is a lot

900 precise fondant cuts, handlings, applications that's 2, 700 fondant touches alone plus a thousand of random handlings

  • make & wrap 30 boards (and i'm already pissed off at myself :)
  • cut out the 30 different shapes you need times thirty cakes
  • apply 900 shapes n.i.n.e. h.u.n.d.r.e.d.
  • boxing up 30 things not to slip during delivery when you really want to throw them out the window by now

no no no no no leah low balled the price!!!!!

icon_lol.gif

i would be furious with myself--i would not even speak to me possibly forever or longer

<runs screaming>

those are really too costly to price adequately

could be done handily by a team

by an individual? therapy might be in order afterwards

it's like when you take your car for a $50 part and the labor is $1000

i would realistically price those about $50 each

and at some point in time i might start talking to myself again

no say you got your decimal point in the wrong place and you meant $45 each

seriously

try to explain the labor

and the therapy icon_biggrin.gif

i was assuming they are one serving size each?

upon a little further reflection

i'd calculate the $50 each plus a 10 to 25% upcharge

(they are too expensive to purchase)

but after you cover each one in grey

roll out a long while piece

cut it into a wide long ribbon

cut out the oval shapes and put the hearts on those

make the 'breaks' the cuts in what's left on the table after you remove the ovals

you will have the oval 'holes' bodered by white

so make the little cuts in the top, bottom & side white border (where the ovals were) to make the little squares

put it this way

if you make rows and columns of oval cuts on a piece of fondant

(rows and even partial columns at least)

you can get there

and it will look matchy matchy if you take adjoining cuts

Yes!  If you visualize the white part *flat* you can see how to do this in one continuous cut.

I think you're in this for $4.50.  It's not really cool to change a price once it's quoted.  Chalk it up to learning.  Painfully.

Oh dear, hopefully $4.50 will be too much for and you can get out of it all together. Ouch.

ooh that's so cool that i adequately explained what i meant <high five> leah!

so full rows and columns of oval cuts

ovel  oval  oval  oval

oval  oval  oval  oval

oval  oval  oval  oval

this way there will be enough fondant to cover the top of the corners

to make the oval outline on top of each cake too

(i just tested it)

you might even need to cut more than three ovals in each row and column

make the ruler your friend!

Hysterical!

Thesweettaste~~After reading all the comments, you may wish to contact the client and tell her that you made an error in the quote.

"Dear xxx,

My apologies for the earlier quote of $4.50 per mini-cake.  After some additional research into the time required to make this exact design for 30 mini-cakes, the pricing I originally quoted is far too low.  May I suggest an alternative?"

BEFORE you send this, decide what you CAN offer for $4.50 or less for 30 guests.  Perhaps cupcakes with a grey fondant top, with a white fondant circle, and a pink fondant heart.  Those could easily be made for $3-4 a cupcake.

if they want it  (please god no) it comes down to basically 60 fondant rollings plus hearts

which is of course 59 more than anyone would want to do but

30 grey & then covering

30 whites & cutting & applying

buncha hearts

y'know if you had someone to talk to while you were doing this or someone to help

i mean a teenager or a spouse could do a lot and it makes a huge difference

they could trim the grey after you get it to fit--knead it up for you

a ten year old could cut the hearts after you roll it out

those seemingly little things can cut down the overal time you need... on the therapists couch afterwards

ACompanion Cube! Nice! :D there's a video on you tube that might help you out. Just search companion cube cake. This girl does a baking show called nerdy nummies. Baking all things nerdy every week. But that does sound like a lot of work. As a beginner I would have at least charged $10 per cake. Hope this helps :)
