When I mix the vodka and corn syrup or vodka and glucose, I put equal amounts in a clean, large empty vanilla bottle and shake vigorously. Then I also apply several coats, while they are still wet (as sillywabbitz suggested). icon_smile.gif

I painted my gel food coloring on then let it dry, then painted on the corn syrup vodka mixture, and it immediately blotched up into little pools. Does it really just need to be mixed more?

i tried adding an equal part of clear piping gel and it made it much better, fyi! I guess certain fondants just dont take well to it.

I have several of her DVDs and I rewatch every few months for those extra little reminders...I have a tendency to get lazyicon_smile.gif

I can't wait to see a pic.

Hi dear Sillywabbitz, I finally uploaded the pic of my wine bottle cake. I think you can see what I meant about the glaze and the uneven panels. Oh well, but overall yeah the couple were thrilled with the cake and the flavor was good. Even though I don't like chocolate I tried a piece and it was good icon_smile.gif so here it is http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1996840
Ok, thank you again for your help and most helpful tips Sillywabbitz!! thumbs_up.gif

Ok so Kim PMed me and solved the prob for me... it was in the preparation. It's about 1/3 glucose to vodka ratio (I took a tsp glucose and a T vodka), then nuke it for 15-20 minutes, THEN mix until it's all dissolved. Must be the heat that sealed the deal. Worked perfectly! Thanks a bunch Kim!

Thank you for the tip. So is it 1 teaspoon of glucose and 1 tablespoon of vodka? and you heat (15 to 20 minutes) in the microwave?? does it boil?

Hi, I have used butterflavour "stray Pam" on my cakes to get that shine. But, my favourite trick....egg whites. I brush it on the surface I want shiny...i.e., leaves or little flowers. Works everytime. Some people use vodka too.

Would any of the methods discussed on this thread work for a bottle made in a mold with candy melts?

I know (from Sharon's DVD) that the edible lacquer works, but I think it's around 30 bucks + shipping, for a can.
Way too much!

I know what you mean, I paid $35 for a can and haven't even use it yet, but in the label of the can it says that yes it works with chocolate, gumpaste, fondant.

Hi again Kim i looked at all three of your cakes , they are wonderful, yes half vodka and half corn syrup  work just as well i use this all the time for shine on gum paste and fondant. Kim your are a master at your bottles.

Hey,

Yes corn syrup should work the same as glucose syrup.  I use slightly more vodka than glucose syrup and then zap them together in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds as it's easier to mix and apply then.  WORD OF WARNING, make sure you don't have any corn flour, etc on your fondant/gumpaste before you start to paint on the glucose/vodka mixture - I had traces of corn flour on my wine bottle and it repelled the glucose mixture so it ended up quite blotchy, but luckily I think I've got away with it - just!

Hope that Helps!

Ahhh, thank you for such great tip on the corn flour. I believe that's what happened to me some time ago, and mine also got blotchy :( ---

Hi Make it memorable, I have used the half and half rose spirit (aka alcohol) and glucose syrup and painted it on.  It took a long time to dry but didn't dry shiny, I did dry it in the dehydrator to speed up the process.  I am thinking to steam it but not so sure it will work since I have the glucose and syrup on it.  Any advice on this as I need to finish it today.  Cheers
