I did this with buttercream and fondant. I cut out the shapes and let them dry them applied them to the cake with buttercream but they were brittle and started breaking. Next time I'll cut them out and apply them before they dry. Also I had another big block on top of the other two but it started collapsing so I cut it up and made smaller ones instead. Thats why the one on the right is slightly squished.
