Steve's Cactus

Steve's Cactus on Cake Central

My attempt to make a cactus cake for my brother. The cactus is a pound cake and the pot is a white cake. All the icing is BC and the needles are royal icing. The little worms were a last minute thought made from rolled BC. Everyone thought it was too cute to eat and to this day it sits in a real pot on my mother's desk at work. I made it in August of 2005!

Okay, the keeping it for over a year is a little strange, but I can understand why - it is incredibly cute! I love to see original looking cakes - and to be corny - this one takes the cake :)

You guys are all sooooo sweet. The green part wasn't too bad. I started not exactly at the top of the cake. I left sort of a circle at the top, and started straight lines down. Well, as straight as I could do it by eye. Seeing how I've only done this cake decorating thing for just over a year - in my kitchen only - this cake took me 5 hours to decorate. There are between 500 and 600 needles on it that had to be placed one at a time. Thank you for your kind words.

That is so amazing looks so real. Great job! I wouldn't mind knowing what tip you used and the how to's to make this cake?

Thank you so much. I believe the cactus itself is the stand-up pumpkin cake pan. And the tip I used for the green part was #21. The pot was the hard part - trying to keep it together. It doesn't travel well so I put it together where the party was. When my mom put it in her office everyone took a second look and alot of people wanted to know if it was a real cactus. One even wanted to know what species of cactus it was. I thought it was okay, but I'm hard on myself. Thanks again for the kind wo...
