Gold Medal At Cake International Nec Birmingham 2013

I started cake decorating six months ago and apart from one or two cakes for friends and family this is the first Novelty Cake I have made. I entered the Competition at Cake International simply to see what constructive feedback I'd receive from the judges. I never expected to come home with a Gold as the Competition is one of the most prestigious of its kind in the world. I decided to enter the 'Sculpted Novelty Cake' category in the Competition and the rules stated that absolutely everything on the cake had to be edible and no internal supports were allowed. The towers have both been sculpted from sponge cake and covered in buttercream and jam before decorating them with Sugar Paste. The Monsters University sign held in between the two towers has been piped with Royal Icing. And the vines and leaves have all been made from Flower Paste.

The cake took me the total of around 300 hours to complete over a period of two months. I have recorded the entire process of making it from start to finish with photographs and I am in the process of publishing a blog explaining exactly how I made it. This contains photos and instructions on how to make each individual character along with everything else.
