Yes Knox, I remember that thread disappearing and many more comments about her beautician and it will happen again. ![]()

I totally agree.
Diane
I didn't go thru all the step by step instructions, just shot to the final pic. Any bride stupid enough to wait until the day of her wedding or the day before and then attempts making her own wedding cake using this guide deserves whetever she ends up with.
I am sorry, I didn't see the picture, I just went on and looked, how sad! I can't beleive they would even print this article.
I'm totally embarrassed for her, that final "masterpiece" is ridiculous! I certainly hope that any bride who reads it, will see the end result and happily pay an experienced baker whatever they ask for.
IS there a way to contact this "expert" Ms. Calloway? Judging from her photo, she gets her hair done at the same place she gets her cake knowledge...

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!
clearly, Nina does NOT visit CC...... ![]()
You might be a redneck if......
Hey Hey Hey...I am a redneck by marriage (married to a cowboy and have 2 little boys, live on a small ranch in South Texas) and this would NOT pass at my house. Even the birthday cake I made for my 5 year old with all the ugly cammo colors was expected to be smoothed out correctly.
Not really offended - funny comment! ![]()
I guess her timeline would be accurate for those results. It would have been interesting to see what she documented for her costs. Then when the savvy bride found out she was off with how "cheap" the supplies were, hopefully she would know that the timeline was inaccurate also. I just couldn't imagine doing this along with the normal stress on my wedding day. Or having my groomsmen help with it? Phuleeze!
Last step the author forgot to add to her article:
Just make sure there are at least 3 - 4 kegs at the reception. Everything and everyone looks better with beer goggles on!
There is another way to think about this, at least she's showing pictures of a cake that doesn't look pro so the bride won't be completely devestated on her wedding day.
My favorite was the suggestion to use foil for the platter.
And I would like to know what difference messing up the piping on a cake would be?
For the methods this woman used the cake turned out pretty good, especially the way the filling was done. Not that I'd want something like that for my wedding cake. ![]()
Here's the email address, tell them what you really think....

I SAY '''SHAME''' ON THAT SO CALLED '''EXPERT''' FOR PUTTING THAT ON A SITE.
HOW SAD FOR ''THE BRIDES-TO-BE'' TO BE TOLD BY THIS PERSON THAT THEY CAN DO THEIR OWN, THAT IT ISN'T DIFFICULT TO DO A SIMPLE CAKE!!
THERE ARE NO SIMPLE CAKES. THEY ALL TAKE TALENT ALONG WITH LOTS OF PRACTICE AND KNOWLEDGE!!!
"Making a wedding cake is really not that hard."
Maybe not...but making a wedding cake that is a work of art and special enough to be a part of your wedding day...well, that should be left to the professionals. Will you be taking your own pictures, as well?

Oh. My. Gobs. Cakes47--You and the other ladies here who've expressed the same-type opinions are right on track. And you know what's really sad? There are countless numbers of brides out there (and we know there are!) who will try this very thing. And they'll try it on HER timelines. On their wedding day. And if they're LUCKY???
Yeah. If they're LUCKY, they'll have someone run down to Wal-mart and stack a few cakes in the back of the van on a last minute run-to-save-the-bride's-sanity-and-hiney-run....
I'd like to give the "expert" Miss Calloway a piece of my mind.
But you know what she'd reply with, don't you? "Yeah...the article is very representative of just what it states. That an amateur can indeed make a wedding cake. And that cake is in no way mis-represented..." type crap.
GAH! ![]()

Im sorry, not to agravate, but the end result is horrible. If its easy to make, why the end result its so...well...like that?Even my cake dummies are a little difficult to make, and theyre not real cake!"A wedding cake its easy to make" yeah, yeah.
Agree with jsmith, very good idea so they can see how it REALLY works.
I can appreciate what the author was trying to accomplish -some brides just aren't born wealthy...I know I wasn't! When I got married 5 years ago, I paid for everything out of my own pocket.
I don't mean I handed each vendor Daddy's credit card, or ANY credit card - I used cash, check, or my bank debit card.
I spent $500 on my wedding gown, $35 on my bouquet, and $236 on my wedding cake (3 tier and the top was decorated like a castle)
I MADE everything else -and just to toss it out if you want to see the pictures just send me a pm.
5 bridesmaids dresses (made out of plum crepe material only cost $8 to make each dress + my time)
5 bridesmaids bouquets,
Unity candle set,
The flower girl basket,
My garter...etc.,
And I didn't have to sacrifice.
Some things can be done by yourself at home...a wedding cake shouldn't be one of them (unless you have the ability).
My mouth was hanging open when I saw the "end result" - even a bride that doesn't have a lot of money should be able to have a nice cake done by a professional (or someone w/ more experience) as long as they prioritize!
I didn't even spend $1500 for my entire wedding, and I also didn't have to make my own cake.
I don't think anyone was contradicting what the author was trying to accomplish about the saving of money. It's just the timeline on making the cake and the end result that we are having a hard time swallowing.
Newlywedws, you did a fine job of economizing on your wedding. I didn't spend any more than that on my daughter's wedding either but luckily her best friend's mom did the elaborate cake for the price of the ingredients.
I did email Nina Calloway and give my opinion. I give it to everyone else, she might as well have it. ![]()
Diane
That is hands down, the worst looking wedding cake I've ever seen!! Holy Cow, I wouldn't send a birthday cake out of my house like that, much less someones wedding cake!! I can't believe someone who is an "expert" posted that picture. Making a cake look beautiful takes lots of practice. I really feel sorry for anyone who attempts to make that sad cake!!
I can't imagine wasting that much money and time on a cake to have it look so awful.
This is the most special day in your life cut back on something else.
I'm sorry but there are some things you DON'T cut back on.
I didn't have a wedding dress. My dress was bought at K-Mart's. I didn't have bridesmaids. My reception was at my Mother-in-law's, pot luck. I didn't have a wedding shower. But, I did have a real, beautiful wedding cake.
No, it wasn't a shot-gun wedding we were just poor.
I sent an e-mail telling the writer what a dis-service she is doing for future Brides.
Well, I think that you can make a nice looking cake at an "affordable" price as an amature. But you have to realize that to get a good end product you need to have the time to put into it. I got into hobby decorating because I wanted nice cakes that I could afford. I may not be the best decorator, but I like the outcome. I will attach my first fancy cake and I figure it cost me about 60 dollars to make. Oh and you can use straws to keep a cake together. It does work. I just wouldn't try and travel too far.

You're absolutely right about that, I started making cakes so my kids could have the 'cool' birthday cakes that I couldn't afford, but these directions aren't going to help the average person. Someone interested in making their own wedding cake would be much better served to research cake sites (CC, anyone?) and learn a couple of simple, valid techniques.
