How long have some of you been decorating cakes? I'm relatively new to this. I've done things for friends and family, but this weekend is my first real test and I am extremely nervous.
Not only am I doing the bride's cake and the groom's cake, but I am catering the reception and doing hair for the entire bridal party and a few others. I also am having to do all of the centerpieces and other decorations for the ceremony and reception. On top of everything else, I have three children to contend with, an uncle who is not expected to live through the end of this week, and my car is broke down again!! ![]()
You guys make everything sound do easy, but now I think I've taken on a little too much
! I just want to know how some of you guys balance everything!
Thanks,
Shannon
Whew, well I have done the centrepieces, decorations and favours and the cakes. But I haven't done the catering along with it and, haha, the hair too! Whew, tired just thinking about it. I guess, do as much ahead as you can. I just cannot imagine how you can cope with the hair and the catering on top of everything else. Are you the Energizer Bunny, haha!
Good luck!

OH MY GOSH!!! Well...you sure put things into perspective for me!!! I have 2 little ones and I complain that I have to wait till they're asleep to work on my cakes! I guess I'll shut up now.....
I've been doing this for about 6 months....I absolutely love it as most of us do! But don't take on so much that you will resent it. I hope you are getting paid WELL for all that you're doing!!!!
I did what I call my first official cake in March 2004 and have been decorating off and on since then. (I don't do any cakes in the summer because we go hiking and stuff a lot and I just can't be bothered mostly, LOL) I bet I still haven't made 20 cakes yet though...
I think you have your hands full. But don't panic...you can get through this. : )
Can you hire a sitter to watch your kids while you do all of this? How old are your kids? You need some help, is there anyone you can get to help you? Is the bride a family member by chance?
I am so sorry to hear about your uncle.
I hope the wedding goes as smoothly as possible. : )
Thanks guys! My husband is actually going to keep my kids, who by the way are 3 1/2, 2 1/2, and 5 months old. And my 16 year old niece is going to help me after she gets off work, but she's never done anything but baby-sit and work at a grocery store, so we'll see how it works out!
The bride is actually my husband's co-worker's cousin, so I had never even met her until a month ago. They're on a REALLY tight budget, which is why I'm basically doing all these things. I know what it's like to be on that kind of budget and try to plan something as big as a wedding. I'm not getting paid near what I should, but like I said, I just want to help out.
I worked for a caterer for 4 1/2 years (who never let me even try a cake) so I know I can handle it. But you know the saying "when it rains, it pours"? That's how I feel this week!
Just please keep me in your thoughts and prayers and hopefully I'll have a really good report next week with lots of pictures!
Thanks again,
Shannon
