Okay, it's way past my bedtime.

Sorry, the Hwy 7 and 404 I was just referring to is the Michael's location, not White Rose. icon_redface.gif

Good night!

I thought it was a little strange that it was on 411.ca even though everyone was saying that they went out of business. I really thought that it was accurate because you would think they would keep their files up to date!!

Sorry to confuse everyone!! icon_redface.gif

Michael's is definitely at Hwy7 and the 404.

White Rose was at 410 and Whites Rd. in Pickering. The sign is still there, but it's been closed for some time now. I know because my dad lives there and he hasn't been able to buy his plants there for the longest while, because they were closed down.
As far as I know, White Rose is history. All the locations have closed. I was visiting a friend in Newmarket last year and the one up there was closed too.

Just a little footnote...

I was at Michaels today.. I did not have coupon, the lady told me they will write your name on "the list" and give you the discount anyways, BUT, they are only allowed to add ten names per day, so get there early if you want to get the discount without the coupon!!

Happy baking...

Hey everyone! Just wanted to mention that Hobby Lobby has a 40% off any one item coupon in the paper this week, so if you don't have a Michael's coupon, or live too far from one... maybe check out Hobby Lobby instead. : )

I work at a Michaels in Ottawa (South Keys). What I have been told is that if you go to customer service and say you don't get the flyer they give the postal code survey and you get the 40% off. I have also been told that you can go on-line to the Michael's website to request the flyer, but I know one of my students had trouble. If you have a subscription to the Ottawa Sun you will usually get the flyer on Saturday, but if no subscription, try calling the Flyer Force (in Ottawa) to see if you can get the flyer bundle. TO must have a similar distribution centre. We have no Hobby Lobby or White Rose or Joann's in Ontario.

OK, fellow Canuckians, here's a thought that's been bouncing about the back of my noggin for a few days. I'll throw this out and see what you think...

A few weeks back, when I was looking online for info on cake decorating, I got very frustrated at the complete lack of any sort of source listing for specifically CANADIAN baking/decorating suppliers or info in general. I also found it disappointing to not see any sort of listings site for Canadian cake shops. Even the "official" Canadian cake club - the name of which escapes me this instant - doesn't have a website, even on Geocities or something.

Never mind if I were someone in search of a cake decorator in my area. There's practically no way to locate anyone this way.

So what I'm pondering is... what would you think of a specifically Canada-focused site where the front end would be a sort of directory of cake decorators listed, say, by city or region so that people hunting for a cake shop can locate a baker near them, get a short glimpse of their wares and prices. The back end would be for the bakers to do some of the community-building sharing, much like it's done here, but paying a fair amount of attention to helping other bakers track down resources such as stores, business suppliers, perhaps an ongoing listing of regulations and requirements (and/or links to them) for setting up home decorating businesses...

These are just a few things I'd envision having on the site, they're just being offered here as ideas and could be modified as needed. I should also note/stress/emphasize that I do NOT NOT NOT expect to replicate the resources for ideas and recipes and in any way usurp the good stuff found here at CakeCentral.com. I just would like to see a slightly more focused Canadian resource center. As has been noted here in this very thread a couple of times, we simply don't have the resources available in Canada that is found in the States and I think it would be beneficial to us as decorators and decorators-to-be to work together and help each other.

What say you? The details of it can be pounded out a little later on if it looks like enough people would be interested but, as a general idea, what do you think? Would you use such a site? Would you want to see some things/not see some things in such a site? Do you think this idea bites?

I live in CA how long does mail take from here to you, my friend gets an ad and I think she don't use it, I can ask if you want.

I forgot to say....

I think thats a great idea "rainbowz", what less hassle it would be to have some Canadian resources to draw from. I must say I do love this place...as you can probably tell from my join date/posts I am an addict. It would just be really nice to have something that is completely relevant to us Canadians...

Well, CD, I must admit some of the idea is based on the fact I'm a little jealous of all the info that can readily be found for our American counterparts. You can go to just about any cake making site (and there are plenty of them) and there'll be tons of links to all sorts of resources. But you look for something Canadian and all you hear is the wind in the trees and crickets.

It would just be nice, or at least I think it would be, to get a small and public directory of cake makers that would be specifically set up (with keywords and other search engine things) to make it possible for other Canadians to more easily find a baker nearby.

Having resources that pertain to our Canadian oddities can't help but build up the business for Canadian decorators. Look at it, we have what, two or three known sources of cake supplies compared to so many more on the US side.

The site would be small; I just don't see it being horribly massive, like this one with 16,000 members. So there's be zero point in having things like recipe exchanges and such for the simple reasons that
A) it already exists here and works perfectly fine, there's no point re-inventing the wheel;
B) with what may be a very small bakers base, it would be unlikely to collect a lot of recipes;
C) the ladies who make CC run put a TON of work into it - I can't see this being close to possible for a much smaller site with a very different focus.

But I definitely believe we need more nationally specific info. That simply isn't available right now and that really, really isn't helping promote decorated cakes in Canada at all.

Here Here! I agree! I'm in Ottawa and aside from Michaels' and Bulk Barn there is only 1 other supply store here. AHHHHH! I only get to TO about twice a year for instructor meetings and rarely have time to get to other stores ie McCall's.

Count me in.....again, only Michaels and Bulk Barn.....Thanks to Squirrelly Cakes, I found out about (1) other store in my area....I am sure there are other decorators that may have some other knowledge they would wish to share...

We should start a new thread for this!!!

Well, I'd want to get a few more Canadians at least interested in getting this going - I can get the site going, no problem, but the actual STUFF on it will have to be gathered and put up by more than just me, so this means it will need some input by everyone to get going.

This sub-topic really has been buried in another topic so maybe it makes sense to start a fresh new thread about this. Perhaps that would attract a few more people's attention and get the ball rolling.

I'll post a new one here in the General forum since it seems to have the most traffic and will, hopefully, get noticed by the Canadians a little more.

See you over there in a few minutes, once I've written up a somewhat more logical view of the project.

Hi cakefanatic,

These are good resources, IF you happen to be American. I am not sure if you realize that when we say "CA" we mean "Canada" and Ontario the Province in Canada, not the city of Ontario, California! Although I can certainly see how one can confuse the two as Ontario, CA and Ontario, CA sure look the same! icon_biggrin.gif

This is why a Canada-specific website would be handy... No confusion.

Your thoughtfulness and willingness to share info is certainly an admirable trait, nonetheless!
