I have never used these baking mats and I was wondering if they really help? Can you roll the dough and cut the cookie on it? Does using a cookie cutter tear or cut the mat? Does it make the cookie bake better? Sorry for all the questions but I am wondering if I should invest in couple. Thanks

You can use them to roll out cookie dough, fondant or gumpaste with no sticking. And bake cookies without sticking. I don't know what I did without one.

In my opinion, Silpats are one of the greatest inventions ever for baking! I don't know what I ever did before them! thumbs_up.gif

They are absolutely worth every penny. I use them for cookies and other things. If you are not sure if you want to invest in one, try one of those silicon sheets (rubbermaid or one of those) and see how you like it. They may discolor or not last too long but the silpat's are great.

These are a great product--BUT don't cut things on them ! They have fiberglass threads running through them in a grid and if you cut through the silicone exterior with a sharp knife or cookie cutter, you risk the fiberglass working it's way through and contaminating things.

I know, I know--some people have cut on them will all types of things and nothing like this has ever happened, yada, yada, but this is indeed, a recommendation from the manufacturer and I have seen them cut and seen the fibers.

Other types of "solid" silicone mats and liners are available--they don't have the fiberglass grids.

I bought mine at Linens and Things using the $5.00 off any $15.00 purchase. My Silpat came to $15.00 and I would not trade it for ANYTHING!

Why would anyone cut something on a $20.00 Silpat mat?

Perhaps if they are cutting out their cookies with a template? Thanks for the info, if I ever get a silpat, I won't use the templates.

My husband got me one for Christmas, but gave it to me early when I was making Kruschiki (a Polish holiday cookie). I absolutely loved it.

I think the cookies came out better because I didn't have to work in so much flour in rolling them out. I use a pizza cutter to cut the diamond shapes, so I lightly rolled it over when the dough was on the sil-pat, I probably wouldn't use cookie cutters or a sharp knife though.

I also got a sil-pin which I quite liked when I tried it out on fondant, but I'm afraid to use the sil-pat and the sil-pin together. whatever's in the middle might just go flying across the room from lack of friction.

love mine also. Bought it quite cheaply from one of those junk mail order companies but it works. Wish I had more.

My husband and both my daughters still cannot believe I can put that rubbery thing in the oven and it not melt!

How do they bake the bottoms of the cookies? I currently use parchment paper to keep the browned bottoms to a minimum.
