Have you ever tasted it? ICK.... there are other options, Marshmallow Fondant taste pretty good. If you go the regular fondant route and are going to color it the color of a fire helmet, please use some plastic/rubber gloves... otherwise your hands will be stained.... fondant can be tricky, so be patient with it... don't forget to put a BC layer under it to keep it secured to your helmet...

I hope this will help somewhat. Oh and if you are going to attach anything small to your fondant you can use some vanilla flavoring... otherwise larger items can be secured with BC.. if you look in my photos I have a wedding cake that has little white pearls secured to it with vanilla, it does create a sheen, so be careful! Good luck and please post your end result!

Many store-bought brands don't taste good (Wilton is the worst offender of this), but some do taste better than others. I make mine from scratch so I flavor it to my little heart's desire and I've not had any complaints yet.

There are NO dumb questions!! Making fondant is quite easy and there are thousands of recipes on the internet. Basically you have a base of glucose, shortening, gelatin and flavoring which is heated up until melted. This is then dumped into confectioners sugar and kneaded like mad for a while, then placed in a container to rest for a day or so. Check out the fondant recipes under this site's recipe section. It's very easy to make!
