I had my first class tonight and I can't wait to make a cake!

We were given the option of doing either the rainbow cake or a shaped/character cake. I was thinking of doing a character cake, but I'm not sure.

What did you do? Pictures?

Also, a second question...which shaped/character pans do you own? I'm just wondering which ones get used the most...

Thanks!! icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, and what about cake #2? She said we had the option of cupcakes, mini cakes or a regular round cake.

Just trying to get some inspiration! icon_smile.gif

I did the rainbow cake for my first cake, as we were told we likely wouldn't have time to finish a character one. Either way, you get to apply the new skills you've learned. For the second cake I just made a round cake, as I didn't have the mini cake pan yet and wasn't interested in the cupcakes at all. The little clowns you are going to make are a lot of fun to do though and look adorable on anything. Good luck with your course and have fun!

Like you, I too have just started with Wilton classes and I love them! My first class cake is the Wilton Sweetheart cake pan cake. Since it is almost Valentines I thought it might be in order and I really like that heart shape. Don't have any pics of it yet but will have tomorrow night when I get home.

The only other "shaped" pans I have are the Wilton Easter Eggs pan and the Williams Sonoma 3-D Snowman pan. I love making the Easter Eggs and look forward to doing them in the near Easter future. icon_smile.gif The Snowman pan is new so I have not tried it yet.

For my 2nd cake I'll be doing the Clown Cake only because I think those silly little Clowns are just the cutest! icon_smile.gif

Hope you are enjoying the classes as much as I am!!

I also did the rainbow cake because my instructor said the same thing...and cupcakes for #2
I have blues clues and care bear and the mini scooby and sponge bob pans....the thing about character pans is unless you really bake cakes like that for kids(or big kids...lol) you probably wont get a lot of use out of them unless of course you know how to turn that cake into something else when decorated.

Hi there!
I just finished my Wilton 1 class & had a fun time!
If you want to see the cakes we did in class, check out my photos. I actually got my first paid cake order after doing the creepy Wilton clown cake. A few fell over when I put on the top of my cake carrier and my DH said they looked drunk. My good friend thought that was awsome and paid me to do a drunken clown cake for her DH's birthday (photo in my gallery). If you are looking to make a little money from your hobby, I suggest that you take photos of the cakes you make in class and e-mail them to friends/family. I think my cakes are just average, at best, but my friends loved them and I got 2 more orders for next month!
Have fun!

I just took my first Course I Wilton Class on Friday night (2-2-07). I must admit I found it a bit dull and am looking forward to the next one when I'll actually be able to work on a cake. The instructor is very nice, but I'm wondering about her level of expertise. Seems like I've done more cakes than her! She didn't know what I meant when I asked her if she's done any sculpted cakes. icon_wink.gif I had to explain them to her and she said the only one was a cake that was too large and she had to cut it down to make it smaller. Oh well.

I'm still looking forward to the rest of the classes and even more, the next courses. Anyway, I'm planning on doing the Rainbow cake as I feel I'll learn more since I've never done the piping gel transfer. I've done a few character cakes in the past and once you've gotten the hang of it, there's not too much left to learn. Besides just the thought of doing a full character in all those stars makes my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome act up. icon_lol.gif

Yeah, she did say we probably wouldn't have time to finish a character one. (she did say we could pre-frost the sides, though if we wanted to do one) I just really wanted to do something different than the standard rainbow one. The point of the cake is to practice pattern transfers and stars, right? So a doll cake wouldn't work, huh? I am doing a doll cake for DD's 3rd bday party on Feb 17th and it would be good practice, but I probably wouldn't do stars for the doll. (although I didn't think character cakes had pattern transfers) Either that or the flower pan...if you have that one do you use it much? Maybe I could find the heart pan Teeka was talking about.

I didn't ask her, but did your instructors let you take a different picture (one you drew or got from a coloring book) and do a pattern transfer with that one? Should I call and ask her? (she gave us her # in case we need help/have questions) I know some people here have used cookie cutters and then filled in with stars but I thought that was defeating the purpose.

I got my Sweetheart Pan from Hobby Lobby. I have seen them all over at various stores, including walmart, because of Valentine's Day being next week.
You should probably call your instructor about your questions regarding a different picture. From all I have read it seems the instructors vary from class to class and while some will allow variances, others like to stick to the book. My instructor seems to be staying pretty close to protocol which is fine by me as a novice cake decorator.
Tonight we decorate our first cake so I'll try and get a picture of it uploaded later tonight or tomorrow morning. Can't wait!! icon_smile.gif

For the first cake, I did mini-doll cakes.
For the second cake (the clown figure piping one) I did a Lizard in the desert with cactus border. It's in my photos if you want to see it.
For the final, she wanted us to basically match the book photo.

Hmmm...maybe I should just do the rainbow cake. I know the point is just to practice, but I really wanted to do something "creative". icon_sad.gif

7yyrt...did you use the star tip on your dolls?

Yes, It was 16 - the one included in the kit. I made one skirt with long strands jaggedy like Tinkerbell and one starred.
I've since found (thanks to CC) that adding a little piping gel or corn syrup makes the strands less apt to break. My daughter took the class with me and made a puffy golden Belle's dress with the 16.
If you make one, be sure to crumb coat with the same color. (trust me on this) icon_rolleyes.gif

I did a shape cake, the Partysaurus cake. It was huge, and if I hadn't been the only one in class i wouldn't have finished it, but I really wanted the practice of doing shape cakes and having to do LOTS of stars. I have two small children and shape cakes are pretty much what i'll be doing for a while. So that's what i wanted to practice most on. There is a picture in my album.

for the 2nd cake, I did both cupcakes AND the round cake. Again, i was the only one in class so i had extra time to work. In hindsite, I'd say the cupcakes were worthless though, nothing that i couldn't ahve done just on the practice sheet.

The 3rd cake was exactly like the cover page. All cakes are in my album.

I had my first class last night and she said we wouldn't be finishing a complete cake until the final class. She said we could bring a cake if we wanted, but that we would mainly be practicing technique, so we didn't need to. I am excited about the upcoming classes, this one was a little boring... icon_rolleyes.gif
