I've tried making roses with fondant and icing and quite frankly - I stink!! 
I'm not coming down on myself, just stating a fact. I know with practice I will get better, but for now they are quite pitiful 
. Anyway, I was playing with playdough and decided to make a rose. I know this sounds silly, but I took a picture and I thought you guys could critique it , so when I try it with icing or fondant I can learn. I think I have too much time on my hands 
I think it looks great! I never thought of trying it with Playdoh. What a great idea. If you don't have the tools, I don't know what you could use as a substitute, but surely there are things around the house that would work.

I don't have any tools, because I just resigned myself to buying buttercream roses from the cake supply store I get some of my things from, but then I saw the prices she charges and changed my mind. 
I also just did a chocolate basketweave cake this last weekend and would of loved to add a few chocolate roses but I didn't have time to learn. So, I'm going to try it again. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated.
It actually looks great! I love the color! Maybe I'll start making playdoh cakes!!
Seriously though, I was horrible at working with fondant and had much better luck with gumpaste and cutters. IMO, gumpaste is easier to work with, more elastic. Try it, it's actually pretty easy!!
That looks great... hmm wonder if hubby will buy me playdough... Without laughing at me! This is a good idea! Just perfect!

you could also make your own playdough/clay to practice with. It is flour salt and water and then color it. i am not sure the amounts but I am sure that if you do a search on the net you would be able to find it.
I used to make clay roses all the time.. all I did was take small balls and flatten them pretty thin into round/ovals and go from there... Thin out the ends of the petals a bit and not so pointed and like eve said more like a bud in the center.. start with a teardrop shaped piece and wrap a few small petals around it.. I think they look good... Good Work!

If you can't make buttercream roses the wilton way, try making them on stick. I think it is much easier. Or else try making them with chocolate kisses as the center and build your petals around it. : )
Looks good to me...just tighten up your center more and you are good to go.
I still have trouble with b/c roses but am fairly good at the fondant roses...I am still practicing.
Maybe one day I will be able to get the Wilton Rose down pat.

Then you can narrow it down to exactly what you are looking for (fondant). If you watch, you can sometimes get some really good deals. I got all of my Wilton yearbooks and a bunch of the character pans at really good prices.
I think you did a good job. tighten up the central a little and thin out the petals more. just keep praticing. I used to make them out of clay also and am just starting to make foundant roses. will be making them tomorrow so I will let you know how they turn out.

Or try Hobby Lobby. They have a 50% off Coupon online for Wilton Products (17.-22 Oct). I just made my first MMF and Gum Paste Roses. It took me about 20 of them to finally get a nice one. Still don't know how to pipe roses with BC 
BTW. I really like your Rose. Looks a lot better then my practise-roses

I just had to show you guys something: My 7-year old decided earlier that she just had to make a rose like mommy - I think she's going to be teaching me a thing or two!!
If you can produce that good a rose with play doh, then think what you'll be able to make with fondant.
I made some MMF roses last week and I thought it was a lot of fun. I would like to learn how to make them out of buttercream or royal icing but I think for a beginner fondant is the easiest. ( That's my opinion anyway) Your rose turned out nice. You should see mine( Notice it's not posted )

I wish more people would post their first attempts at things like cakes,fondant, roses, etc. I think it encourages people to look at the not- so-great attempts as well as the ones that work out. I don't like all the cakes in my posted pictures, but I think its just as important to show the ones you like as well as the ones you don't. It reminds us that we all make mistakes and are still learning.
