i'm new to making cakes for other people, and i'm wondering about how many servings a 6' two layer round and an 8" 2 layer round actually make. my chart for the 8'' says 20 or 25! i can't see how, maybe i just cut my cake pieces too big. and my chart for the 6" says 12. it's just hard when someone says they need cake for 10,-12 i'm not sure if i should do 6" or 8". any input would be appreciated.
The Wilton charts are way off. You'll have to cut small tiny pieces to get that many! Go to Earlenes.com A lot of us on CC use her charts. It's way more reasonable then Wilton's
I actually used to use Earlenes and found that people were having a ton of left over cake. On the recommendation of a friend I started using the Wilton chart and I still have never had anyone run out of cake. I think Wilton's chart is good.
for wedding cakes and such I use the wilton chart because it works out to my advantage less cake tiers needed etc....but for other cakes birthdays ....I just sat down and played with a piece of left over cake to see what was fair and resonable to me....I didnt want anyone to feel cheated....you Cake at a birthday party is a big tada.......so I just sat and crunched the numbers in my head and jotted them on a wilton chart so I have both on had i like 2 x 3 is what I like...... but it all depends on what you feel is fair... keep in mind you dont wantto have a much larger cost in the end.........
but to answer your question wilton say thats it 12 servings for the 6 and 20 for the 8 inch.....
I go by wilton for weddings. I've never had a problem with them running out. For birthdays I make up my own. If you find Earlene's too big, Colette Peters has serving sizes in her book that are in between wilton and Earlene.
