Ok. Ohio Dept of Agriculture allows what is called a Cottage Business. This is making non-perishable goods like cakes and you do not need to license or get inspected. You just need to label the product. My question stems as I do this sparingly on the side I still would like to get my name out there with some business cards. Since I only do a cake here and there I guess the question is how do you actually name this so called business when it really isn't one per say???

Would it be enough just to say "Homemade Cakes" or "Homemade Baked Goods" ?

I don't think in your case you really have to have a name for it......when I first started out, people would ask me if I had a name for my "business"......I didn't consider it a business, just something I did on the side and as I told one customer one day that I didn't have a "name", she named it for me and I liked it so I kept it..........a good name will come to you and until then, you don't have to have "name"......just my opinion. icon_lol.gif

Ok So If I name my cake business do you need to license it or what??? Say I want to call it Mark's Piece of Cake? Is it that wasy or is there more to it. I guess I was not planning on claiming all the cake pans and mixer stuff for my business as I see this as a pain so I am just wondering how this works and if I need to get a tax ID. I but everything retail and not wholesale and it is not really even part time. ?????

I think the law varies from state to state quite a bit. In my state, I can have an uninstpected business...but after a certain amount of income $$$$ I have to obtain a tax ID number and be official in that capacity.

NAME YOURSELF!!!! Size doesn't have a thing to do with that .....and business cards are just letting people know that you want to bake for them some. You can decide how much.

I am just getting started also....I made my own business cards last week and carry them in my purse. If you have a computer....many software programs have business card design options.

Good Luck!!!
