Saw a Facebook post wanting a last minute fortnite cake this was posted Tuesday night and they wanted it for Thursday evening.

Had a private message with the person and they gave the full go ahead for me to make the cake for them, I said Id speak to them tonorrow about my address and collection time. I'm only a new business so hadn't been taking deposits (too trustworthy), hadn't had a problem yet.

Message this guy with no reply for 24 hours. He messages me at 3pm on Thursday saying I'll collect this evening send me photos lol so ping him the photos that I had. He doesn't reply to me all night and doesn't show up!

I then plan to give the cake to my cousin whose birthday it is this weekend that I was going to make a cake for until this guy messages me at 8pm the next day saying he's sorry he was held with work and will deffo collect tonight. He finishes work at 9.30, so I say fine I'll stay up till 10.30pm and I can't wait anymore.

I made another cake in the meantime for my cousin and he didn't show up. I rung him twice through messenger and messaged him he was active too and yet still he won't answer anything.

I've messaged him saying he's let me down twice and I'm now going to have to cancel the order as I feel like I'm putting myself out for him too much and I'm not even sure if he's taking this seriously.

I'm so worried about the responce I might receive, but I know it's for the best surely? It's difficult to tell if someone's being genuine or not but he doesn't even inform me if he's caught late at work or anything.

Have I done the right thing.

The only thing you did wrong was wait too long to tell him the order was cancelled.  There is no excuse for him jerking you around like that.  He has a telephone, if he is unable to pick up the cake at the given time.

Right now, starting today, you need to start collecting the full payment for the cake prior to the delivery date, preferably before you even start baking.  You also need a contract.

So sorry you are dealing with this.

Unfortunately because you’re relatively new to cake decorating and business in general, you’ve just learned a valuable lesson. Always take a deposit, 50% to secure the date. If a last minute order, like this fella, full payment before pickup. Or no cake. You were too kind, and certainly gave this fella plenty of leeway.  I wouldn’t have stayed up till to 10.30 for a cake pickup no way, no how. Those are not normal business hours. And puts you at personal risk. And as Sandra posted, you need a contract for customers.

Agree with the others On another site a decorator tells of her experience of being *raped* by gunpoint in a similar incident —but he did show up late at night Don’t ever allow such late hours & don’t be alone when you have a pick up scheduled even if it is a friend or neighbor

Oh forgot to mention that being new here you will not be able to reply to any post for about 30 days so if you want to comment on any post just start a new post referring in the subject line to the one you are talking about

What a waste of time and money. I always tell anyone who's interested "I do require payment upfront to book the order, and can send an invoice out if that works". Most have no problem with that and pay right of way. If someone doesn't reply, well, they weren't going to pay anyway, saved me time and money.

I completely agree with you, inthekitchen2.  If a person doesn't comply with your rules right away and without complaint, they are probably going to be trouble.
