How do you pros price your groom's cakes? By the slice as for wedding cakes or by the size, decor, etc. like a party cake? I have my first order and it's to be a stack of 33 LP records with the top record having a label with the groom's name and song name on it. It is still in the talking/design stage so I'm not sure what size the cake will end up being.
Also, with replies to this, could you guys explain some of the initials used for discribing different icings and other things such as: BCT, MMF, DH to list a few. Thanks a bunch. Marcia in Texas
lets see, mmf is marshmellow fondant
dh is dear husband
dd is dear daughter
FBT is frozen buttercream transfer
now, for the grooms cake, I charge a bit less then the wedding cake because usually it is a very simple design, like a sheet cake...but if it is stacked and detailed like a wedding cake, you'd almost want to charge the same for it.
maybe make the bride a deal, order bridal cake and grooms cake and get so much off, or free mints.
just my two cents
others will let you know also I'm sure

I love making Grooms' cakes because they are usually fun and somewhat whimsical. As for my pricing...my cakes start at $50 and go up from there. I put extra time into anything I do for the wedding and I make that clear to my customers. Normally...a wedding is the time when you can raise your prices a little.....not to say that I make extra money one these cakes but I am paid for the extra attention I put into them.
I will pretty much do a groom's cake at cost because chances are they are already buying the wedding cake and a catering package from me. If they are going to spend that much with me, then heck yeah I'll throw in a side cake to serve 25 for next to nothing.
I charge the same amount as a wedding cake or more. To me a tiered cake is a tiered cake no matter what the occassion.
The sculpted cakes are more per serving than a wedding tiered cake.
A sheet cake is priced according to the design.
Since I want to stay in business I have to charge for the time and experience.

If a bride orders her cake and catering, I usually charge a nominal fee for the grooms cake, unless it is detail oriented, or sculpted. If the bride orders both cakes, I still give her a break on the grooms, because most of the time they are simple, even if it is tiered. i get a fair price for wedding cakes and don't feel like I have to charge the same price, besides my business is paid for, so I don't have the overhead others do.
My business is paid for and my building will be paid for soon and I will charge the same price and continue to increase prices as time goes by.
If you work for someone else don't you expect to get a raise as time goes by?
Do you expect to get the most experienced craftsman at a discount?
If you feel guilty about not needing to collect as much money then why don't you still collect the appropriate wages and then donate the money you don't need to very needy children, etc.
Sorry it's your business, not mine.

In my case, Groom's Cakes, are a lot more detailed and theme oriented. So, I charge a bit more. No less than $4.50 per serving. Course, it is a much smaller cake so that isn't too hard on their pocket books!
I usually do the groom's cake for a nominal charge as well. It is usually smaller (around here) and my prices start around $50.00.....the one I am doing in July is just a sheet cake, hockey player shirt that I am charging $75.00 for.
Thanks for all the input. I am just doing the groom's cake for this wedding and now I know it will be a 12" round to look like a stack of LP records and a 6" round (off-center) to look like 45 records on top of that one. I was thinking $75 for this one? Just Chocolate scored to look like records and then make the labels for the centers probobly out of fondant and then "paint" the design and wording....? Opinions???? Thanks,Marcia
I charge the very same thing I do for wedding cakes. Some of my groom's cakes are large and sometimes detailed. I have to deliver this rascal too and set it up so they are charged the same. I have NEVER had a bride question me on this. If she did she would be welcome to get her grooms cake else where.
When someone orders a groom's cake from me, in addition to a wedding cake, I offer a 25-30% discount. I do price it similarly to my other cakes, though. If it has choc-covered strawberries on it, I charge $1.00 each for plain, $1.50 for tuxedos.
The discount is offered as an incentive for one-stop shopping (and hey, while you're here, wouldn't you like this?), and I have about a 50% success rate with it.
I just did a consultation with a bride...she booked me for the wedding cake but said her mil had someone that she wanted to make the grooms cake. The bridge really wants me to do it and I still may get the grooms cake order...but hey, if future mil wants to do it then that is less that I have to do.
Of course it is less money for me ![]()
