When stacking 3 - 10" cakes do I need a cake board in between them. I plan on using dowels to hold layers together. It's a birthday cake. Thanks in advance.

The usual rule is to board & dowel every 4" but lately with these 6" tall cakes people say they are not. (I personally have not make a cake over 4" tall)    A piece of 6" tall cake does not fit on the 'usual dessert' size plate  - it will hang over :(

Most of my cake tiers turn out to be around 6" and I never use a cake board.  Like kakeladi said, they art really too tall for comfort, plating or eating.  I am trying to scale back a bit!

Oh, and unless it is a fragile cake, I don't dowel them either.
