Hi there!
I’m making a cake in a few weeks and I will be buying black fondant, but I’m not sure which brand is easiest to work with and tastes decent. I usually make my own fondant, but I’ve never done black before so I’m going to buy this time.
My choices are Wilton or Satin Ice. Which do you prefer to work with and which tastes better?
thanks!
I most often buy Wilton black fondant (I also make my own except black and red) because it is readily available, but I am using it on sculptures and will not be eaten. If I were making a black cake, I would buy Satin Ice chocolate fondant, which tastes like Tootsie Rolls, and use gel color to make it a true black. Since it starts out as dark brown, it does not require nearly as much gel color.
I’m not fond of Wilton black, and it’s expensive here in Canada where I live. Satin Ice is often times too stretchy. I have often mixed Satin Ice with another brand, like Virgin Ice fondant that is a cheaper Canadian brand. So I get the best of both worlds. Virgin Ice tends to be very dry, especially black, and Satin Ice kind of soft and stretchy, as I said. Mixed together I got perfect consistency fondant. Hope this helps.
I don’t remember using any but Wilton I flavor it w/vanilla usually but any can be used Don’t measure just add until it smells good Usually by then it is so well worked it needs a bit of sugar or cornstarch:(
The last two times I used Wilton's black fondant it was a disaster! So, I'd recommend Satin Ice even though I've never used it. lol :)
