see you might have to make molds for those ornate pieces to keep the everything in perspective -- you know that yes? or I mean if you can find something similar in the right size that would be pretty cool -- but be prepared to make them if necessary --

probably $10 a serving -- $1,000 -- but you'll have to make it bigger than the 100 servings because it will be odd shaped servings -- but not charge for the additional servings --

I would say 15 inches long, and the red & orange sections on either end would be 4.5 inches, the green section would be 6 inches wide -- then the ends would be 8-10 inches tall and the height of the green section would be 9-12 inches tall -- so it's a two tier cake with a board halfway up -- so the medallions have to be about 4" and the other froo froo  on either side needs to be 5 inches wide and maybe two inches top to bottom then the other froo froo on each end right next to the pearls needs to be about 1.5" wide and then add the fleur de lis & scroll there midway with the five pearls --

so this would be about 120 - 150 servings give or take a few

and there's a little bit of leeway there in the measurements so you can eye ball it at the end to make sure the measurements are matching the object -- so you could possibly make it a liittle shorter than the 15" but i'm not re-doing all those measurements -- ha! but that's why you charge ten bucks each too for the 100 -- lotsa math -- but that's just off the top of my head -- so do your own measuring blush

Aww Thankyou so much for detailed reply. So my client is not willing to pay even $700 for this cake. She is telling me that it is ridiculous to pay this much amount. And that she get quote from another lady who can make this 100 serving in $150. And i was like

"And that she get quote from another lady who can make this 100 serving in $150. And i was like     " - sorry, coffee just came out of my nose reading that. :-) :-)

Yes to what K8 said, but I would have also thrown into consultation session the fact that it will need to be more than 100 servings, if the client indeed has 100 guests, as the shape is irregular.

Still laughing at $150 quote... maybe, the real quote was for 1500, but the last 0 got cut off and lost in the email? Would $150 even cover the ingredients for this?

So long story short, I  apologize her that I cannot make it for $150. She can go with that lady who is able to make it in just $150.

OMG keep this one for posterity!!! I am in owe of the gall...

Mixed emotions, I feel like finding the undercharger, and slapping some sense into her, for killing the market. Or waiting to see that she makes the cake for 10 servings for that price, which would be pretty fair :-)

Anyway, good riddance of that client, and my only advice is not to apologize. As in - never start a sentence with "I am sorry, but... -" as this pharing puts you on defensive from the get-go, and implies there is something you did/do to be sorry for. Works for other life situations, too ;-)

Wow! Her reply was ridiculous. I would tell her one more time that I can't do it for $150.00, and then tell her that I hope she has a lovely event. I want to see that $150.00 cake when it's done. Cheap doesn't always mean better. The fact that she laughed and said it was ridiculous would have been enough for me.

There is this saying... "you get what you pay for" and I have a funny feeling that this lady is not going to be happy with the cake she ends up getting.  I also think her being cheap is a blessing in disguise because I just get this feeling that this lady is the type that wouldn't be happy with whatever she is provided.

I mean it might look straight forward to the un-intiated but to get it right -- it's gonna take a sharp eye and some expertise -- this other chick is quoting a dollar fifty per -- I mean who does an 8" birthday cake for that price? no es bueno!

K8 I really appreciate your advises. You gave very helpful tips. And you talked about making molds for ornate pieces, i didn’t know about that.

I thought it would be funny, if that cheap cake maker is going to find her way to here, post that photo, and start asking questions on how to make this cake for 100 people, and stay in the $150 budget...

There probably wasn't ever even someone who said they'd make it for that price. I think she was making it up hoping the price would come down to what she wants to pay.
