I figured everyone would end up picking the box mix because most people are used to it, it's what they know.

It's possible that this is the very reason that people love LOVE the WASC cake recipe. Right @kakeladi ?  It's better than the box mixes that people like.

That's probably why I have always prefered BC mixes for the *original* WASC recipe :)   I have tried the other brands - including store brands and always go back to BC.

When you see who the tasters were - all young people - it makes scense that they would choose a mix cake.   I feel bad for Ron Ben-Isreal.  I'm sure his cakes are very tasty but unless you are used to scratch cakes it might have tasted dry.

cake mixes simply make good/great cakes —

I was with a friend at Costco who was picking up a last minute cake for an event — Costco sells what looks to me like a half sheet but I think they call it their “sheet cake” anyhow — the label said it had two or three pounds, can’t remember which but I think it was three pounds of chocolate mousse for filling — she got a vanilla cake that had a cheesecake filling — oh hello yeah! these were off the shelf!! I love those cakes!

That is exactly why I use the WASC as the basis for most of my cakes done for other people.  Not too many people grew up eating homemade cakes.  I did, so I prefer scratch cakes.  Mostly, I reserve them for my husband and I.
