I've been baking most of my life but I've only been decorating for about 2 years. I made a cake for a friend today and the top tier fell over on the drive to her house. I used boba tea straws to secure the top tier. This has never happened before. Has this ever happened to anyone? What is the best way to secure cake tiers?
Yes it does happen now and then. What size was the top? Was it placed on another tier? You say it was secured w/straws but what was it attached to? If it was transported by it's self, then most likely it was on a board the same size and that is not enough for transport. You need to put cakes on (even a tempory) larger base - expecially small ones. A 6"x4" round should be placed on a 10" board w/a dowel allthe way through into the board then you remove that 10" board once at the venue. It's hard to understand exactly what happened from what you tell us.
sure that certainly happens -- there are a plethora of possible reasons why --
did you measure the straws to each other so they are all the exact height?
or did you place them and clip them off to the top of the cake?
did you have slippery fillings?
