My work are holding a bicycle race themed charity bake off. There is a famous cycle race that will be running directly past my workplace.

I’m a bit stuck in what to make as I have limited time. I’m known at work for my side business making cakes but I don’t want to show off too much. If I had more time (and a paying customer) I’d make something like this:

So I’m thinking of doing a flat, single tier, square cake with the road winding round the top and little paper cyclists on cocktail sticks. But it seems a bit too simple.

Any ideas on something in between my idea and the picture?

Oooh!  I have the perfect idea for you—pic on my phone but have NO idea how to post it :(  It’ a cake I made yes ago — royal icing bikes on a flat/sheet cake w/take corners cut off to look something like this <_>   Hopefully I can get my daughter to help me post it

if you are going flat -- just brainstorming here -- what about a nice big round one layer cake that you can easily disguise into the shape of a wheel lying flat -- chocolate around the edges for the tire -- maybe cut off the top & bottom edge* so it easily wraps around there like a tire -- a silver rim showing -- just an inner circle of  silver or grey color -- put spokes, just piped lines or fondant lines -- then in the center top of the cake  where the hub of the wheel is -- make it a roundabout where the cyclists go around on both sides and back down the street kwim --

easy peasy outlined type décor -- after you pipe the chocolate tire wrapping around the edge -- when the icing is not tacky -- press a skewer into it to make tire treads -- so it's kind of a bike tire morphed into a roundabout with small cyclists going every which way you want -- I mean you could have a little railroad track going off the side of the cake onto the board -- again very simple lines and have a couple cyclists stacked up in a wreck -- they often wreck on railroad tracks -- just a "RR" sign would be enough indication -- made out of paper like you said for cyclists  -- could be too much but again easy peasy piping for railroad -- and to signify the road -- it could just be a couple yellow broken lines under the spokes -- so you have two views of the cake -- from afar it looks like a bike wheel -- close up aerial view it looks like part of the race down a street -- (with a wreck at the tracks -- maybe maybe not)

*for the tire -- the chocolate doesn't have to go all the way down the side of the cake to wrap around the bottom border area -- to make it more distinguishable  and in proportion -- it could just come down part way to keep the slimness of a road bike tire in the eye of the beholder -- the rest below that could be just plain white or a little grass, bushes or just simple line border --

what race is it?

Thanks K8 for all the ideas. Definitely lots for me to think about.

Its the Tour de Yorkshire. It’s like the Tour de France but in northern England.

Here’s what I made in the end. I’m really happy with it as it didn’t take long and tasted delicious.

The sponge was made with brown sugar and a little cinnamon and the icing was flavoured with lots of Lotus Biscoff spread. I crumbled Lotus Biscoff cookies between each layer too.

Thanks K8memphis. I like carving cake (and eating the offcuts) so I thought I’d make it a bit more fun.
