Two questions. I need 20 party servings, and would normally do an 8" cake for that, however since it's taco shaped, would a 12" cut in half side by side for a taco be enough cake, so I can still just do one batch of cake batter?

Second question: How do I make sure that the taco doesn't tip over as I want it standing up?

Thanks!

Last ? 1st: ice the board to hold the cakes up   Try cutting the cake at a slight angle so it tips out just a bit to leave room for taco fillings   Yes a 12” would be good — especially if you use 1batch of batter but a thinner cake will be much less stable standing upright    Maybe place a couple of kabob sticks upright in /thru the board w/the cake impelled on them to help keep them up:)

That's a good idea about the kabob sticks, I didn't think of that! Thanks.

idk -- that's gonna leave your taco over 6" tall and if it is at angle as well -- it could crack -- idk -- can't quite picture it but you have way too many servings i think -- a 10" one layer cake is comparable to the 8" double layer size -- unless you are sculpting it a bit -- but a 12" taco is gonna be huge for 20 folks -- just depends on how much you cut off --

you need to make it look like a tier cake inside -- you need to dowel and board it halfway if it's gonna be that big --

a standing up taco is a really different animal than a laying down one -- it's a sculpture -- even out of a 10" layer, it possibly will not hold if the taco shell is angled out -- it will be 5" tall -- think that through some more -- it's on the cusp there at 10" -- it's def over the line at 12"

I guess I am picturing this taco standing up -- but -- upside down.  I';m seeing it in my mind w/the rounded part on top, the cut/straight side down.  That's why I suggested very slightly cutting it so the 'shell' is open.  Though I have never used it icing/cromb coating this cake w/ganesh might be enough to keep it from cracking - along w/some kabob sticks?  I sure hope a pic is posted when done.

So, I'm too nervous with the standing up idea, though I have seen cakes like that standing up. I thought about baking in a sheet pan and stacking up cut rectangles over impaled dowels on the board, and then carving the taco shape too. She never said it had to be standing up though, I just like that look better than lying down. Anyway, I think I am going to go with 4 tacos together. They can either be standing up, or kind of leaning on each other, maybe with one down. Not sure, I'll figure it out as I go I suppose. But, I'm going to halve (2) 8" round cakes, and put the flat (cut) sides down to make 4 tacos. I didn't think about filling, so I will cut the halves in the middle too to fill so when they are standing up and cut that way, they will have filling in the middle.  I hope that makes sense.

Yes it sounds more like what I envisioned
