I need to prepare simple syrup for a cake (never used it before though) and have a few quick questions:

---Is it ok to apply the simple syrup after I get the cakes out of the freezer and before I frost them?  Or should the simple syrup be applied after the cakes are baked but before they are wrapped to go in the freezer?

---If I should apply the syrup after the cakes are taken out of the freezer but before they are frosted, how long should I wait to let the syrup soak in?

---Is there a rule of thumb concerning how much to use on the cake layers for their size?  I don't want to make my cakes mushy.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I put mine on before freezing -- in fact I fill the layers too and freeze all that together -- take them out and ice them frozen --

here's an old picture -- hope it comes through

Just nosey - why do you think you need simple syrup?  Most cakes if not overbaked do just fine w/o any - just saying.

Like kakeladi, I never use simple syrup on my layers.  I have, many times, made a glaze similar to simple syrup, and I apply it while the cake is still hot, shortly after taking it out of the oven.
