I'm thinking of using these pandas as cake toppers on an upcoming family birthday cake I'm making:

They are Schleich toy panda figurines.  The cub will go on the child's individual 4 inch cake and the bigger panda will be going on the 9 inch cake that will be feeding the rest of the party guests.  What I'm trying to figure out is how to use them as toppers without them sinking into the frosting on the cakes and making a mess.  They will not be on the cakes long, but just long enough for photos alone and with the birthday girl.  They will not be transported on the cake.

Is there anyway to support them and avoid a cake fail?  According to their Amazon pages, the bigger panda weighs 3 oz and is about 2.5 inches tall.  The cub weighs about .8 oz and is 1.8 inches tall.

You could insert a couple of straws in to the cake, add a decorated cake board, and sit the pandas on that. That's how I always do my toppers. I'm sure someone has a better idea, though. For the kid's topper, I would do the same. I don't like just sitting my toppers on icing.

Thanks for the input @ypierce82 and I agree, I don't like the idea of setting them directly onto the frosting either.  I wish there was a way to quickly display them for a photo that wouldn't involve messing up the whole top of the cake.....like a tiny platform.  Similar to those plastic little table things that sometimes come in the center of pizzas.....

I know what you're talking about! When I take my cake board off and remove the topper, the top of the cake is still in tact. My buttercream has crusted well before I put the toppers on at the party.

It might be more trouble than you want to go to but I would cut out cake board the same size as the base gluing it to the figure   Other than that I think ypierce's suggestion of topping the cake w/a supported cake board.   Oh, another idea just popped in my mind -- dip the base of the figure in choco before placing on the cake w/a triangle of straws/dowels in the cake to support it.   or make a choco plaque for it to on as part of the top decorting.

all of those ideas are great — you could use a cookie or a nice dry fondant plaque and then discard it — doesn’t seem like you’d need dowel especially for the little one but it doesn’t hurt a thing

like ypierce said, once the icing sets up you could even flatten a muffin wrapper and set the panda on there — the wrapper would even conform to the shape especially in foil

Thanks everyone!!  These are great suggestions!  The toppers just got here, so I'm kind of anxious to figure out how to make them work but you all have given me so much to think about and it's so appreciated!!
