After perfecting my smooth icing technique, I now need to do a "rustic" buttercream. It looks like almost a watercolor technique, but not smooth. Help! I've already practiced a few times and It never comes out looking right. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas!

Pictures of what you are aiming for??   That would help.   Have you tried icing it, then piping or just smearing on the color and spraeading it?  Just not sure what you are going for.

Without seeing a picture, I can only guess at the effect for which you are aiming.  Lately I've seen beautiful cakes which are first iced smooth, than had a design added with a pallet knife or spatula, generally around the bottom or the top in bright colors.
