I cant reply to my original comment yet but wanted to thank you for your advice (was about using broken cake layers). l ended up using one layer and making another 2 layers and eating the really bad one.
And do a brag. Here is the finished product. Working on smoothing the ganache, gets hard when the ganache chills lol and I've never worked with royal icing before so forgive the butterfly's lol

Your ganache looks great! I just stick it in the microwave for a few seconds, if it becomes too stiff. Next time, try patching the cake layer. I promise, it works.
oh so nice & tall -- well done -- whipped ganache always has a mind of it's own -- I love the graduated sizing on the butterflies -- lotsa hard work!
