I am making a 3 tiered birthday cake using the cake sizes of a 10", 8" and 6". How many layers of cake will it take to make it look tall enough to decorate on them but also still be pretty sturdy?

I have read before that it depends on the height of the cakes, but when making 3 different flavours for each tier and different recipes, I never know how tall the cake will be when it comes out. Is there anyone who has made these cake tiers before who could give me some advice on how many layers of cake it would take?

Something this height would be good:

I prefer to bake in 2” deep pans so I bake 2layers for each   The finished tiers are just a smidgen over 4” tall   You said your making each tier 3 flavor??   Did you mean each tier would be a different one? If so then bake each tier 2X    If you’re pans are 2” deep then each tier will be 4”tall - just the perfect size:)

maybe not this time but eventually you might want to learn to torte the layers -- so your two layers of cake get split in half horizontally so it looks like four layers --

best to you

yes but getting your first tier cake up and running is more important -- you gotta lotta learning curve to digest at this point -- once you get one out of the way you increase your confidence by a lot and away you go!
