Would love help figuring out how to do this technique for a friend’s wedding cake. It’s by Sweet Heather Anne. Thank in advance!

Looks like buttercream  start with yellow then add smears of the other colors and smooth

I agree with kakeladi, frost the cake in yellow and smooth, then add blobs of the other colors and partially smooth until you get the effect you like.

Thank you--I will try that!  Only thing, when you zoom into the photo, it looks like there are dark lines between most of the colors--like a marbling or like a tear line.  Possibly the line is painted on?  The cake is described as painted buttercream.  Hmmmm.  I'll start experimenting.   Again, thank you!!  :)

tripleE, I went back and enlarged the picture again and I believe you are seeing a shadow underneath the thicker parts of the frosting, not a darker color that has been added.  If you wanted to emphasize the look, you could take a small paintbrush and paint a line following the bottom of the different sections/blobs.  This technique is called painted buttercream, where you are using the frosting in a painterly way.

After enlarging it I see what you are asking about and agree totally w/Sandra.

yeah it looks like the painted parts are not completely smoothed down -- they are kind of 3-d
